Aspergers Bristol 5yr old

DH and I are pretty convinced that DS1 (who turned 5 in August) has Aspergers (as was). He seemed to manage okay in Reception (although it turns out there were lots of incidents the school didn't tell us about) but over the summer we had daily violent meltdowns and now in Y1 he has already had an internal exclusion. We are seeing an independent ed Psych in early December and have a referral to CCHP next week for what I hope will be the start of the assessment process. The school are doing what they can - calm space, play therapist, social skills work in place of assemblies, etc - but are clearly struggling even though they do have other SEN kids and some with Autism apparently.

DS1is very bright, possibly gifted, and actively enjoys school though he doesn't seem to have any friends as such. TBH if it wasn't for the meltdowns, we probably wouldn't have considered there to be an issue, though looking at his behaviour generally it seems clear he has high levels of anxiety and lots of other ASD traits as well. I just wondered if there was anyone else in the Bristol area with a similar aged child experiencing similar issues. I know Bristol Autism Support do coffee mornings, but they clash with activities I take DS2 (NT as far as e know) to, and he already has to accommodate DS1's requirements in so many ways that I'm loathe to do so any further.

Thanks for listening

Hi rosalux. I'm in Bristol with my 13 year old DS who has a diagnosis of High Functioning ASD (what they called Aspegers when he was diagnoses). I just wanted to reply and say well done for starting on the long road to diagnosis. I also know from experience how hard all of the social aspects of your child's life can be.

I would recommend getting in touch with Supportive Parents Bristol - they offer help to parents of children with all types of disabilities, including keeping information about groups that meet up in different parts of the city and helping with dealing with schools and the health service. Here is their web page: www.supportiveparents.org.uk/services-in-bristol/

All the best to you and your DS.

Hi LaundryFairy. Thanks for the post. I will look at the link you suggested and maybe PM you if you don't mind, as even though our DS's are far apart in age I imagine there is likely to be some common ground.

Yes, im in Bristol, with a 5 year old son who is being assessed for asd. Have just had parents evening at school and it is apparent they/he are struggling. I'm happy to keep in touch via mn, but don't have much advice to offer at the moment as we have only just seen the paediatrician and are waiting for salt to observe him at the school. I have been wondering what support might be out there so perhaps we can share anything either of us find out? Smile Hope your appointment goes well.

Hi thefudgeling I am happy to send you a PM, but not quite sure how to. We have our CCHP on Thursday and I'm not sure what to expect.
