Where can we move to?

After 10 years of loving Bristol life my husband and I are thinking about leaving Bristol as we're ready for a change from city life. We'd really like to live somewhere with a lot of natural beauty on our doorstep, smaller schools, a rural feel, and a sense of community; people not too busy to pop in, bonfires on the village green, that sort of thing. We're considering Chepstow, the Wye Valley, but I'd love to hear from others for recommendations. Would like to be within 1 hours drive of Bristol still. Thanks for you all your help!

Will you still need to travel to Bristol for work? Both areas you mentioned are lovely, but I wouldn't want to commute from them.

I know people who moved near Tintern but quickly returned to Bristol - having been used to everything on their doorstep they found needing car for pint of milk / trip to drs / school run too much and also quite isolating.

Less of an issue if you can afford nice house in a village. Budget limited them to outside of village or on new build estate on edge, neither of which offered what they were looking for.

Think queues for bridge were straw which broke camels back.

Sorry if this sounds really negative, I know everyone is different and you might not be bothered by the same things.

Clevedon.
Sea views, pier, community feel there is a community run cinema and a community run bookshop, the marine lake is also community run. Tennis club, leisure centre, bowls club etc Good schools, all the kids go to the same secondary school. Hill road area is lovely. Lots of Victorian and regency style properties. Short hop to Portishead for a community run lido and community run cafe and also the marina.
Easily Commutable to Bristol.
10 mins from tyntesfield.
Easy access to cu tryside and coastal walks.
Full of people who have moved from Bristol!

So many choices!! I do know ppl who live in chepstow and the wye valley and work in bris, and the commute is doable but v variable. Sometimes literally 25 mins from chepstow, others it's more like an hour 25 mins.

How about towards Bath/Chippenham/malmesbury?

bumtibum · 17/11/2016 12:34

Thanks everyone - this has really helped. I definitely get the feeling that the commute from Chepstow will be variable! I am a fan of Clevedon and P'head too but think they are too built up for hubby who fancies a bit more rural - just like thousands of other young professionals no doubt! x

Try tickenham, it's on the way to clevedon but rural.
To be honest I wouldn't underestimate the usefulness of having a s shop, dry cleaner, bank, school, youth centre, chemist, hairdressers, sports centre etc nearby without getting in the car and driving to them.
But sometimes you need to explore all the options before you find the right one.

We moved to Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire (just on border with S. Glos) this summer and we absolutely love it; we decided a year ago that it was the place for us (upped sticks from SE London) and are so happy with our choice so far. At the weekend it takes 30 mins to drive into Bristol city and my DH commutes to the outskirts of Bristol (without going quite into the centre) and his commute is less than 30 mins, friends who work in the city itself use various park and rides and I think their journeys are still under an hour - and probably more reliable than a Chepstow-Bristol commute given the bridge element.

We looked all around the houses as we knew we wanted to be back in the Bristol area as have family here and funnily enough we also discounted Clevedon - gorgeous place but something didn't quite fit for us and we felt a stronger sense of community in Wotton. We happened upon Wotton on here and also hearing from friends of friends who had settled here and raved about it (as I grew up in S. Glos). The schools (preschool, primary and secondary) are really fantastic and for a small town it packs a lot of punch: we have rolling hills and fields of sheep behind us but we are about 5 mins walk from a high street that has a fab small cinema, an open air pool in summer, a library, two small supermarkets, lots of independents like a butcher, several bakeries, deli, bookshop, outdoor gear shop, craft shops, several coffee shops, takeaways and pubs as well as an excellent steak restaurant. We actually walk more now at weekends than we did in London where our route to our local high street was bisected by the South Circular! Since we arrived there have been lots of events and more planned for the next few months (blues festival, arts and crafts trail, talent show, fireworks, Christmas evening on the high street, not to mention the huge community feeling and ongoing events at our eldest's primary school). The sense of community as a young family has been second to none and we have found making friends easy. I am expecting our third baby any minute and have been bowled over by genuine offers of help from people who didn't even know us 4/5 months ago, it really feels like people have time for you and go out of their way to be friendly and extend social invites! The children (6 and nearly 4) are thriving in their school/preschool and we have managed to get them easily into activities and clubs so they feel fully settled in.

In terms of ruralness - for me it's the perfect combination of real rural beauty (walks, woods, Cotswold Way, streams, fields, nature and animals are all minutes away from home) with walkable small town amenities. Take a look at the 'I love Wotton' page on FB for examples of the autumnal beauty of the last few weeks, some stunning pics. The housing stock is varied - lots of period homes but also 60s/70s semis and detached and more modern estates dotted around the place. Houses go really quickly and we got our home from posting a letter through doors -which I would recommend if you know what you'd like to find and don't want to rent first!

Also in terms of driving further afield, there is obviously copious amounts of countryside within minutes and the towns, cities and villages of Bath, Gloucester, Stroud, Nailsworth, Uley, North Nibley, Tetbury, Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury, Dursley, Yate are all nearby and between 5-40 mins drive... some of which are beautiful and some are more practical but we do feel very well positioned for most things! In terms of family friendly activities, there are NT properties, Slimbridge, Westonbirt Arboretum, Cattle Country all within 10-20 mins drive.

As you can see from this monologue I rather like the place and we are hoping to convince some of our London friends to join us here!

Do you have parking at your work place? If you live in Bristol already you will know that parking is a big issue, and if you move further out there may not be a decent public transport alternative to driving.

FoilWrappedBiscuit · 21/04/2021 12:12

@lulupeg you probably won't see this, but just wanted to thank you enormously for your post. When we were househunting it inspired us to look at Wotton-under-Edge and we fell in love with the place. Have just moved here and can't believe how brilliant it is - the countryside, the walks, the amenities, and most of all the sense of community. We looked everywhere and it was the first place that felt like home. We wouldn't have found it without your post, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

lulupeg · 21/06/2021 17:24

@FoilWrappedBiscuit ah I did indeed see it and have been meaning to write back for weeks!

I’m so glad you found Wotton from this post, it really is a special place, and to the outside world a bit of a hidden gem. Funnily enough, I found out a lot about it from Mumsnet too, despite the fact I grew up very close by, I had no idea it had so much going for it.

Having said all of that, the reason it’s taken me so long to reply is that we are about to leave for two years! My husband has a job overseas and we are jumping at the chance for an adventure! But I know we will be back to Wotton as it really does have it all for a youngish family. Ironically we moved for the secondary school (and primary!) and now my eldest will start his secondary career at an international school instead! I’m sure our paths will cross at some point though, it’s like that round here!!
