Moving to Trowbridge

Hi!

We're moving to Trowbridge (from London) in the next couple of months with a newborn and her 2 year old sister. Friends who know the area better than us keep warning us that it's not a great place to move to, but it ticks lots of boxes for us (not too rural but close to lovely countryside, affordable houses, good nurseries, nice park, decent transport links and not overly posh).

We've found a great house to buy but could someone offer some reassurance that we're not making some huge mistake??! And any advice about things to do with the kids, groups to join etc, would also be much appreciated...

Thanks!

Sorry but I really would t want to live there. Its not the best area of Wiltshire at all. Its deprived and there are always news stories about various crimes in the area. I don't believe the schools are that great either.

It certainly isn't considered a desirable area to live.

Not everyone can afford to live in a 'desirable' area. The houseprices in Trowbridge make financial sense - why live in a tiny 2 bed terrace in Bath or Bradford on Avon when you can get a large 4 bed detached in Trowbridge for the same money.

A very small area of Trowbridge is deprived. If you look at the official stats is around 1,300 households out of 43,000. This area is very similar to Twerton in Bath in terms of deprivation.

Trowbridge has a good mix of all sorts of people, from the very wealthy to the struggling. Plenty of educated, open minded people, prehaps unlike Whattodo.

@FDFD90060 my kids are much younger than yours so not sure how helpful I can be!

We cycle around a lot, Biss Meadow, Paxcroft Brook and Green Lane are good for that as they all link up. Obviously the canal towpath is! We spend a lot of time at Barton Farm Country Park in Bradford, walking, cycling, paddleboarding, kayaking. Lots of very good farmshops about if they're your sort of thing. Trowbridge Twon Hall have lots on and there is free yoga in the park at the moment. I hope when my kids are bigger we'll spend lots of time in Bath on weekends. Friends older kids do a lot extracurricular things through their schools. Well done for getting yours into a BoA school!

Thank you @MaudDeBohun it's refreshing to hear from an intelligent person who understands how sometimes what we want is not always what we can have. I am a single parent who works full time remotely who had a specific budget (I didn't want to go to my limit and then struggle which I would have done with the cost of living crisis now) and Trowbridge was the only place where houses were coming up in my price range near my sister in Bath, near schools. Some areas had local school 8miles away which was not ideal.
I really appreciate your comments and now you are not judgemental and indeed I have met people from Bath itself who are absolutely lovely but also bought in Trowbridge due to affordability.

Thank you for your ideas on what to do in the area, that's fab. We love National Trust also and are members so that's also something we can do. Interestingly we did view a house in Twerton which overlooked council estate. I have no issues with the mix of people because just because someone isn't on a high income doesn't mean they are ignorant or dodgy or other. You're a gem @MaudDeBohun thank you for being honest and fair about Trowbridge and understanding other people's situations. It's people like you who help remove any panic or undue stress thanks to your balanced views. 💜
