Schools for year 5 & year 9 - where in Plymouth

I'm relocating with my family to Plymouth in the summer - I know it a bit as my mum grew up there, but she died suddenly last summer, hence wanting a fresh start from our current home. I'm struggling to find the right area to live with decent/ok schools for DD who will be year 5/DS who will be year 9.
I wanted to be in Peverell/Mannamead but worried about secondary schools for DS. Is Eggbuckland any good? DD is a little grafter so I know she'll be ok wherever, DS needs rather more encouragement to do anything! Now looking at Elburton as more houses available but I know traffic etc is bad from City Centre (DH will have to get train now and then to Reading/London for work) and not sure how Sherford development will impact it. Any ideas/views much appreciated - thank you X

I think we're going to rent and just see what house prices do (hopefully we won't lose our buyers here, all seems ok at the moment). We saw some lovely houses at the start of the year round there when we hadn't sold ours but it's all dried up since the run up to the referendum. The lettings people said there's always a turnover but come a month before you want the rental to start so we might have a look next week when we come down to see the school. 3.5 weeks left at work so it's all a bit scary and real now x

Yes there's normally quite a good rental selection. Prices are quite high
compared to up north but I don't know where you're moving from.

Have you decided where your son will go yet? If you end up in Plymstock (where there are some good rentals too) then I'm sure Plymstock or Coombe Dean secondary schools would be fine for him. Coombe Dean is about half the size of Plymstock in pupil numbers. Your DD could go to Pomphlett primary which is expending.

DD has been offered Eggbuckland Vale so making the most of strike day and bringing her down to have a look next Tuesday. My hairdresser pays £800 for a 1bed flat here (we are in between Maidenhead/Slough/Windsor) but I'm hoping to get a house for around that in Peverell. I think there's a bus to Coimbe Dean if he gets allocated it from Peverell. Smaller would be better for DS definitely and Plymstock is full for his year group.

Well we finally did it and moved to a rental in Mannamead last weekend, both DC got allocated Eggbuckland schools and we are all very happy with the move. DD has asked if it ever rains in Plymouth so I think we've been lucky this week. Loads of kids for them to play out with whilst I unpack!!! Thanks for all the advice X

Your DD will regret that question!! 😊 It rains here all the bloody time.

Eggbuckland Vale is a lovely school, it was second on our list when we chose. Yes, it rains here. A lot! We've been lucky this summer I think!

Just dropped DD off this morning, it does seem lovely there even if the parking is a bit stressful - I'm still adjusting to hills and parallel parking trauma. DS got offered a place at Coombe Dean on Friday and starts tomorrow so feeling very lucky.

I never even knew hills were an issue here until I visited other cities and realised they barely have any 😁.

Coombe Dean is supposed to be a good school so that's great.

When you look at your phone and it says you've climbed 15 flights of stairs and all you've done all day is walk to get a pint of milk and back again 😂😂

DS seemed to like it there today and 2 pieces of homework on day 1, that's already doubled what he did for the whole of year 8 in his last place!
