Location best for a young family

Hi all

My husband has currently found out that he will have to move to Glasgow for work. We currently live in Manchester.

We need to live in or around Glasgow. We have a two year old and a three month old so needs to be somewhere nice with potentially good primary schools to send our children.

We are moving away from family so this is quite daunting and we haven't a clue where to start in buying a house here

Do you have any idea of budget as that can determine where is best for you.

The best performing schools statistically are in Glasgow's West End, Southside or East Renfrewshire. Maybe have a look at these areas on rightmove and if you see anything you like you can ask some more specific questions about each area if you find one you prefer?

West End- trendy, university centred, primarily living in flats, excellent access to parks, some school admissions issues re: catchment/class sizes of recent.

Southside- not as cosmopolitan as the west end but still plenty of cafes and parks. Some great schools.

East Renfrewshire- Just outside of Glasgow, affluent suburban area. Parks etc. Always in top rankings for schools.

lenzie/kirky on the north of glasgow (east Dunbartonshire) has good transport links into the centre . Good primary schools in lenzie, and lairdsland in kirkintilloch is very good. All feed into lenzie academy secondary. Restaurants etc not so great but house prices lower than in Bearsden/ Milngavie which is the other part of east Dunbartonshire. Depend if you want to be in the city or in the suburbs ,

we've been in Glasgow for 10 years approximately.
Moved to knightswood when our daughter was born and got out again a few years after - it was a bit too suburban + schools not great.
We have a great place in the West End and absolutely love the life there... but schools not fantastic (and living in flats). DD1 going private at the mo, which we cannot sustain when DD2 starts primary. Hence another looming move to the burbs... probably Milngavie way!

Come up for the day, and tour the city a bit. You need to have a feel for the areas to make a decision. If you can, rent for a little while, maybe a garden flat in the West End - it is a good starting place, near the subway, loads of nurseries and activities.
