holiday activities for accompanied children

Hi,

My son is nearly 6 and I'm increasingly noticing that the holiday activities are mostly things that I cannot attend with him. So I mean things like football club and craft clubs where I would have to drop him off in the morning and pick him up at the end of the day. I understand that this is geared towards working parents, but I don't work and ds and I like to hang out together. We would love to have activities to go to where he would be with other children and I could stay on with him, and there really aren't many things like that.

We have nice neighbours to play with but they tend to go away to visit family for the whole of each holiday so that our holidays can be very quiet indeed.

I wondered if anyone might know of suitable activities in the Cambridge area?

Thanks!

Hi - I think you're right, most things are geared towards either working parents, or older children who might want to do things more independently. I am often working, but when I take time off in the holidays I usually check the what's on listings (eg on the Local Secrets website), and also the University website. There are often drop-in activities in the museums, botanic gardens etc. Cambridge Science Centre is also good for this, and I've been to some nice drop-in crafts at Gt St Mary's church in the city centre. Also check out CHYPPS (www.cambridge.gov.uk/chypps-overview) - a lot of the sessions are drop-in and there's lots of other children and families around. Also it's worth having a look at Wandlebury etc - they've had some family session for accompanied children on over Easter. Further afield you could look at National Trust properties, and Audley End.

There are things like this. Mine are a bit old now but have done art/craft/finding out workshops at the Botanic Gardens, Fitzwilliam, Zoology Museum, Kettles Yard etc as well as pond dipping/craft/den building at many National Trust places. In those situations parents were expected to stick around and even join in.
