Ways to Meet Mummy Friends in Wimbledon

Hi, I'm mum to a six month old and wondered if anyone could offer some advice.

I'm struggling to meet other Mums in SW19/20 and am feeling a bit isolated.

My friends were through sport which I can't do much of at the moment and he's not old enough to join nights out yet.

I'm looking for recommendations of groups where I might meet some other mums so that I'm doing less eating/coffees on my own. Lack of adult conversation is driving me crazy!

Thanks!

Hi KitKat36

Thank you for posting. It can be very daunting as the mummy of your first born, finding new friends, particularly if most of your pre-baby friendship group hasn't yet embraced parenthood.

Here is a list of local Toddler Groups. Don't be put off by the name as there will be plenty of mums of babes-in-arms there too.

Merton Libraries offer lots of different activities (and mainly FREE) aimed at parents with pre-schoolers (and younger!) across the borough too.

Gooseberry Bush Cafe on Kingston Road (only a 10 minute walk from Wimbledon Town Centre) has lots of health and well-being activities aimed at women, including mummies with little ones (and baby bumps!). And the cafe is great for a Brew and Cake too! Wink.

There are lots of paid-for local pre-schooler activity classes aimed at mums with babies too.

There is a vacancy to coordinate the MN Merton & Wimbledon meet-up group too, if you fancy it? It's a way to meet other mums AND suss out some local cafes, softplay venues, 'newbies' screenings etc... in company.

When it gets warmer (and your DS will be a little older by then) try out going to the local parks too. Some of the best friendships I made post DCs were when pushing babies in swings and following toddlers around.

Good luck!

Kate

One comment via Lisa Lockett (Flowers for commenting) on our FB page (quoted in its entirety):

"In the past I've been to groups where you just sit on your own with you baby feeling so left out and alone. I tend to go to groups over in Kingston as that's where I did my NCT course which is the best thing I ever done, BUT I couldn't recommend this enough - It's at St Pauls church in Kingston , near to the hospital , it's is the loveliest group I've ever attended, the people that run it will introduce you to other mums if your new and on your own, they offer tea & coffee and treats, my friend was breastfeeding and a lady came over with a glass of water incase she got thirsty which was so thoughtful !! It's a lovely way to spend a Friday afternoon , I've put details from the website below :-

Welcome! Baby Rainbows is a friendly group for parents and carers with children under 1. Please come along and join us for coffee and chat, toys and singing. It's a good opportunity to make new friends in the area. The group meets from 1.30 - 3.00pm in church on Friday afternoons during term-time and costs £2.50 per family. For more information contact Lizzie on 07787 512525, [email protected]."

Hopefully more Merton Mumsnetters will give you some other local options too.

Join SW19 Mums on Facebook! It's really friendly and supportive and lots of good suggestions for groups. Good luck. The first few months are tough, but it gets much better and there are lots of lovely mums in SW19!
