Comberton Village College

We want to move (like so many other people) to the catchment of Comberton VC. Our budget is £325k so isn't huge for that area. We have two DC, one about to start reception in September and one who will be in Year 3 in September so we would need primary places for them. Are the primaries all going to be full and a nightmare to get into? In-year moving seems awful to get our heads around for school places and I know the primary places are about to be announced. We like Coton, Barton, Little Eversden from our drive around but so does everyone else and there is nothing in our price range at the moment and possibly ever. Is Comberton a nice place to make friends (me and the kids) as we would be leaving our lovely village community and I am apprehensive! We have ruled out Cambourne.

I wish, I would probably be able to afford a bigger house if I was. I just love her!

Have you considered Bassingbourn? We moved here just over 3 years ago and my two love the primary school. The village college is nice and small and very good too. The village itself is fantastic. Have friends who attend Bourn primary and they highly rate it too.

Hi chiefwoodpecker, no I haven't really looked at Bassingbourn. I will have a bit of a Google.

The journey to West Cambridge has got a lot easier in the last few weeks since the Madingley Road roadworks have finished. I live in Bourn and it takes me 15 minutes to get to the P&R on Madingley Road, used to take 30+ in the morning.

I would second the suggestion to consider Cambourne. It has developed a strong sense of community and everyone I know who lives there loves it. House prices are more reasonable than surrounding villages, and you can cycle to west cambridge if you are fit enough!

PippaFawcett · 30/03/2016 22:16

I wouldn't be fit enough for that, MrsGrowbag! The houses in Cambourne are definitely nicer than what we can afford elsewhere. I have been looking at properties in Linton today but it is still quite far from work for me - because of traffic - and I was hoping to cut my commute down. But houses are about £100k cheaper than those in the Comberton catchment and Linton VC is also outstanding. Anyone know much about Linton?

We are going/gone through the exact same situation. I would sell and rent in the village who's primary school you like best then wait for a suitable house even if you end up in a different village. We've gone for Coton but will prob buy in Barton. Eldest is at CVC and it's great, she needs a machine to keep her on track! She was in a middle school before which was helpful, I think the tiny village primaries are not great for transition. I'm not very impressed with ours. You might find a house for your budget in Hardwick, maybe Comberton. Linton is lovely and much cheaper, if you can commute from there I would, it unfortunately doesn't work for us.

what did you end up doing OP? kinda in same situation

Hardwick to West Cambridge is perfectly cyclable. I used to do Romsey to just beyond Hardwick by bike daily. As you say, not pretty, but functional, with a pre-school, school, shop & post office, vet, hairdresser, pub ... and new houses being built.
