Thumb sucking advice

I'm looking for advice on thumb sucking. My 4 yo won't stop and my dentist has advised that we begin to put an end to it.

I don't want to make a huge issue of it and make my lo feel bad about it. I've sat her down and talked about it and the reasons why she needs to stop. But it's worse than ever.

Has anyone had any success in helping their lo stop?

Sorry op I'm 49 and still do Confused no problem with teeth from it either, I wouldn't keep drawing attention to it. I had a horrendous time with family members threatening to cut my thumb off, horrible nail varnish stuff on my nails the lot.

It never stopped me, it was a comfort thing and still is Brew

My parents made me stop when I was about 6. I started biting my nails instead, and still battle with that 60 years on. Just leave her to it - chances are she'll grow out of it if you don't focus your and her attention on it.

Cold turkey I'm afraid to say and a reward chart when she does not do it. My nephew was the same age and just refused to stop. My sister did not scold him or go on about it, he just did not get treats, TV etc if he sucked his thumb. No drama or dicussion etc. Also there was an older boy next door who was about 5 years older who my nephew loved to play with and my sister asked him to say that thumb sucking was silly and not something a 4 nearly 5 year old should do and he stopped almost overnight! A bit of disdain from a peer made all the difference!
