Schools Comparison in Chapel Allerton

Hello there,

My family and I are due to move to Chapel Allerton in the Spring when our DD turns three. I would welcome thoughts on the pros/cons, characteristics and perceptions of Chapel Allerton Primary, St Matthew's and both the Carr Manor Primary schools.

Thanks.

Our child goes to carr manor community primary & we're very happy with the school. Carr manor prinary is just around the corner & seemed like a decent school when we went to look around. Chapel allerton primary seemed absolutely grim & the head was not very inspiring

Haarlem · 13/01/2016 20:51

Oh & we didn't consider St Matthews as it's a faith school

Chottee · 13/01/2016 21:24

Thanks Haarlem that's very helpful. How long ago did you look around CA Primary? Just wondering if the hHead may have changed since then. Also, was there any reasons you chose CM Community Primary over CM Primary. I'm guessing there wasn't much in it and it was just a case if personal choice?

St Matthew's is in RI, staff and governors are unhappy and leaving in droves. Carr Manor parents are happy, staff are not. Chapel Allerton have recently got themselves out of RI and seem on the up, but the head has been there for eons so it's hard to shake up. Heard nothing but good things about Carr Manor Community School, although it's still v new - think they have got up to Y4 by now.

Chottee · 13/01/2016 21:47

Thanks Elizabeth29 that's really useful too. Do you know why CR Primary staff aren't happy?

Carr Manor? Head rules with a rod of iron, apparently! It's very popular though.

Chottee · 13/01/2016 21:55

Yep Carr Manor - ah right, I see. Thanks again!

Can't agree with Elizabeth at all.

My DC go to Carr Manor and there is a very strong sense of community there and the staff are great. The head has always been fantastic in my (admittedly limited) dealings with her.

DD went to the nursery at Chapel A Primary and it was abysmal. If it still has the Head it had in 2011, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Elizabeth29 · 13/01/2016 22:02

It does!

I know several members of staff at Carr Manor, NotToday - and I did say I thought parents were very happy.

Chottee · 13/01/2016 22:07

Thanks both.

Elizabeth29 - I just realised I referred to Carr Manor as CR rather than CM. Oops apols for any confusion.

NotTodaySatan - any reason you chose CM Primary over CM Community Primary?

We put carr manor primary as our 1st choice with carr manor community primary as 2nd choice in our 5 choices. We're really pleased with carr manor community. Our child is in reception. We put chapel allerton primary as our 5th choice as it is very close to our house, the closest on our list of 5, & we didn't want to risk being allocated a place somewhere miles away in east Leeds or something. The head teacher at chapel A is the same as has been for years. I got a very shitty vibe from the place

Haarlem · 14/01/2016 18:14

You are guaranteed a place at carr manor community high school if you child attends the primary, which I believe is a good thing

Haarlem · 14/01/2016 18:16

Oh & you are allocated a place, you don't necessarily get your preferred school. As it turns out we're very happy that we were allocated our second choice & if we knew then what we know now, we'd have put CMCS as our number one preference

Chottee · 15/01/2016 08:23

Thanks again Haarlem! Really pleased it has worked out for you. What do you mean by "allocated", I've heard this mentioned before but I don't understand the purpose of 5 choices if you are just allocated a place. I've looked at the priority list too and my DD would only ever be priority 4 or 5 (I think) I.e. Accepted based on distance. Is there any point putting a school on your list which is slightly further away because you like it or is that just a waste?

You are not guaranteed a place at your preferred school, this is the case throughout the UK. School places are allocated on the basis of proximity of school, siblings at school etc. Some schools take 60 reception children per year, some take 30 etc. The local authority here recomend that you include yoyr clisest school as the crow flies, even if you put it as choice 5 otherwise you may find your child is allocated a place miles away from where you live

Haarlem · 15/01/2016 09:30

For example, we knew we would not fet into weetwood as it's asmall school & we live too far away but we still put it before chapel A primary on our list because chapel A primary was our absokute least preferred but was our clisest

Haarlem · 15/01/2016 09:31

Apologies for typos, trying to do too many things at once

Chottee · 15/01/2016 19:31

No worries, appreciate you replying. Thanks that is all very helpful!
