Hi, I'm moving down to Cambridge to work as a development scientist at the Cambridge Research Park in Waterbeach and I would really appreciate some honest opinions on good areas to move to - biased or not - to know where to start looking. I'm looking to rent and I prefer areas with a bit of peace and quite and preferably reasonably priced i.e. £500-550 a month per person. I'm not looking to live right in the heart of the city centre as I heard it can be quite steep but I would like to be able to commute down/up every weekend. I'd prefer relying on public transportation but if it's too troublesome I'll contemplate on getting a car. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Quite a tight budget if you're looking to live on your own! Very little if anything in the city for that, unless you're willing to go into a shared house. Good or bad areas, although TBH Cambridge doesn't have proper bad areas if you're used to larger cities.

The rental market can be pretty vicious, even outside of Cambridge. Properties having lots of viewings and going quickly, high fees etc.

The Research park isn't actually that close to Waterbeach, which is a problem for e.g. train.

You can consider cycling: it's common for commuting around here. Cottenham, Milton, Landbeach, Histon, Impington are all close enough to cycle, though the conditions aren't great. I believe there is a 'back access' to the Research Park by bridleway, which avoids the A10. Otherwise there's an okay cycling route via Landbeach, but can't avoid the last small section on the A10. There is no pavement here either, so walking is out.

I don't know so much about driving to Waterbeach, but don't assume car is the pain-free option. The traffic around here is awful, the A14 grinds to a halt regularly, depending on where you are. But the location of Research Park may limit other options. If you do commute by car, it's still not the best way to travel into Cambridge due to congestion and lack of parking.

Don't know about the buses, sorry. They certainly don't go into the evenings, so you might be restricted on times.

Histon and Impington are on the Guided Busway, which means getting to Cambridge by bus, walking or cycling is very easy. Heading further north, Oakington, Longstanton, Over etc also on the busway, with several other villages not far off.

What about moving to Ely/ Stretham? There is a bus (can't remember the number) that runs down the A10 and will stop at the Research Park. I'm a big fab of Ely, more reasonably priced that Cambridge, growing cultural scene, the book shop puts on lots of events. Nice tea shops, not so great for bars, but new things keep opening. I know academics, and younger workers at law firms/ big 4 etc are moving to Ely as it's affordable, there's also a really good train service to Cambridge when you need it and direct trains to London

waterbeach is pretty nice - and very near for work - its about 2.5 milts you would need a car to get to the research park i think still - there is a bus but not very frequent - and I wouldn't cycle - altough people do. you might be able to car share as i bet there are loads of peple in waterbeach who work there If you live in Ely it will not be a great commute - very busy at peak hours

The trains are good into town from Waterbeach and OK to london or it is possible to cycle into Cambridge . Its perfectly possible to drive in Cambridge at weekends -BTW just don't part at the Grand Arcarde!!
This is facebook site for Waterbeach which is very helpful

oh looked on Rightmove cheapest rental is just over £700 but could get a house share for less

The no.9 bus runs half hourly from Cambridge to Ely and back and stops at the research park. It's usually (but not always) ok heading out of Cambridge but can run late the other direction. I've not used it for work mind, just periodically for getting to Ely so no sure whether I'd rely on it or not.

Or if you fancy Cambridge itself, live in a house share near the station and get the train to Waterbeach? They run every half hour or so I think. Or live in Waterbeach itself if you like peace and quiet and then just get the train into Cambridge at the weekend?

Orchady - the research park isn't in walking distance of the train station in Waterbeach
