Friendly, creative place with a hippy vibe

Having been a single mum for the vast majority of my son's life, I'm now engaged to be married to a lovely widower with two kids.

We'd like to move to a place with a railway station, independent shops and cafes and maybe an arts centre or similar, and ideally where our two primary-age kids can walk to school. His kids have been through a lot so we are both keen to find a town that is welcoming and creative - and one where I can go into a pub on my own without being stared at or hassled!

His son goes to secondary school in the south of Birmingham so we'd have to get him there, but he is used to a fairly long commute already.

Has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks very much in advance.

PS this is my first post so I hope I have not contravened any rules...

Malvern and Pershore spring to mind, but that it would be one hell of a commute to South Brum. Both have what you require in terms of facilities, as well as lovely parks and good pubs. Strong communities with lots going on. Malvern is bigger with a retail park and a Waitrose.

I'm in Pershore, and it has a leisure centre, indy shops, cafes, a community arts centre, and children walk to school - on their own at middle school age.
Its not hippy though, but welcoming.

Its a decent length drive to Birmingham though - would he not consider moving schools?
