Living in Ely

Hi, DH and I are thinking of moving to Ely with 22mo DS. We're looking at Ely itself rather than the villages so DH can commute by train (me too eventually).
Can anyone please tell me: 1. Is there much to do for toddlers/ young children?

  1. What are the good primary and junior schools?
  2. Are there any 'dodgy' areas we should avoid?
  3. Did you find it easy to make friends? I'm a SAHM and concerned about feeling isolated initially.
Thank you Smile

Hi, Ely is a lovely place to live. I don't think there are really any dodgy areas. I am pregnant at the moment and have been looking into different things to do with children. There seems to be quite a few things such as swimming lessons, sensory classes and the library does some nice classes but I can't comment on them from personal experience. There are also lots of nice social days, like The Aqua festival, Apple day and Ele Day. The fireworks by the cathedral are also very good.

Hope this helps...

Meant to say Spotted in Ely on face book will also be able to help with your questions.

I've lived in Ely for years and it's a lovely place. I'm about to start going to some baby groups and the library is lovely too. Can't comment personally on schools but have heard great things about them! Commuting by train to Cambridge or London is fairly straightforward - hope that helps!

I recommend you try the Olive Tree (I think a 2 year old can still go) baby group....it is very friendly. There are various others too and it is quite easy to meet people as you tend to see the same faces at the different groups.

There are over 5 different parks in Ely and then if you have a car it isn't that far to Thetford Forest, West Stow, Milton Country Park etc, where the kids can be outside too.
