My daughter is due to start P1 in 2016, we are trying to naturally decide on whether to go with our ND state school - Trinity Primary (Trinity Sec.)or go with RC - St Mary's Leith (Holyrood Sec.) There is also Gaelic Primary to throw into this occasion.
I would really appreciate if any parents here whose kids go to any of these primaries and/or secondary could give me more details about their positives and negatives. Ta.

There are only a few independents that offer boarding now. The larger independents ie Watsons, Academy, Heriots stopped years ago. Stewart Melville has a small number.

Schools do offer transport to outlying areas but it really is only a small percent.

The majority of pupils attending GWC live within a two mile radius of the campus.

Agree Athens.

Not that many kids at GWC travel in from outlying areas, it think most days it amounts to 2 coaches, which for a school the size of GWC, is nothing really.

I would honestly, hand on heart, say most primaries in Edinburgh are 'good' though. Well-known as being good, maybe not so much, but most are good. DS old primary in Leith was wonderful.

I meant students with catchment secondaries of Gillespie or Broughmuir surely has a less chance of transferring into a private secondary compare to the other schools.

And no our RC secondary is Holyrood one unfortunately not the St Thomas. As there are 2 different St Mary's and St Mary Leith.

It is good to know Trinity Academy is changing their head surely something had to change with such expectations on school's last report and what they achieve academically on exams were so different.

Not saying it's not still a high percentage in Edinburgh, just pointing out the discrepancies in the 25% figure. Don't know about GWC, but I drove past the Queensferry Road Stew Mel building yesterday and I think there were about 5 coaches outside it.

Well no, not really. Boroughmuir covers Bruntsfield and Morningside, James Gillespies covers the Grange and Newington areas, both v affluent where it is relatively common to transfer out at P6.

Athensofthenorth · 21/06/2015 07:54

The coaches also pick up in Edinburgh. A Stew Mel coach picks up at Fairmilehead and Morningside for example.

As Lonnie states transferring to the independent sector at the start of P6/P7 very common.

Though many parents in the Boroughmuir/ Gillespies catchment opt out of the state sector altogether and send their children from nursery onwards.

An entire new P7 class is created at GWC to deal with admissions prior to senior school they have 5 classes in each year from p1 to p6, then 6 classes in p7. I presume the class sizes stay pretty much the same all the way through, approx 21/22 per class.
