hello, we are moving to Brighton and I am struggling with schools. until I have an address I cannot apply for a streamline school and was considering private mixed. Can anyone provide me first line experience at either St Christopher's Hove, Hurstpierpoint College or Lancing college. At this stage my kids did not get into Brighton college. thanks!

Hi puzzi we had a similar thing with our move, it was a real stress not knowing about guaranteed school places until we had an address! In the end though every thing fell into place for as as we decided to move before the end of the school year and not as a new start in September. When I spoke with the admissions team they then told me which schools had spaces so we then made a decision of where to live based on that.

That might not help you if you have decided to go private but if you are still considering state check with the school admissions team and see if they can give you anymore info in school spaces.

I can't offer any advice on the schools above though!

How old are your DC?

puzzi71 · 27/05/2015 07:49

one will be going in Y4 in Sep, another in Y2 in Sep and little one will be in nursery one more year. I phoned the council, but they would not give me any info on schools since I don't have an address.... a cat biting its tail.....

What area in Brighton are you looking at? We had exactly the same issues and although the staff at school admissions were lovely they would tell me nothing, until I said we were moving before the school year finished.

So maybe try rewording the questions slightly. If you are considering central Hove area I can share what I found out, my DC will be year 4 in September too!

We don't know Brighton and we are not sure where is best to live with a a family of 5. We were considering Kemp town to be close to Brighton college, but all has changed now.....

Are you happy to share what you found?

Do you think it's better to move before the school year finishes? I don't want them to end up is a bad school....

If you ring school admissions they will be able to tell you which schools have places for the year groups you need. Pretty much all Brighton schools are primaries rather than infant/juniors. if you are after an oversubscribed school then you ideally would move as close as possible to be high on the waiting list I guess.
Area wise it depends what you are looking for and your budget. Money goes much further in places like Portslade or Patcham than in central Hove or Brighton for example. If you are not fussed about Brighton itself you could look at Shoreham for example, lovely place and less pressure in school places from what my friends have told me anyway!
