Waiting to hear about Primary School - Cambridge

LocalEditorCambridge · 14/04/2015 11:52

Are you waiting to hear whether you've got your 1st (2nd or 3rd) choice?

I went through all of this last year - so if you want to sign up for a support thread to share joys / frustrations / ask questions / meet parents from same school or in same boat (appeals etc) - sign up on the thread!

Fingers crossed for you all - I know how stressful it can be.

Offers are on the website. Pleased as we got our first choice :-)

EverybodysGoneSurfing · 16/04/2015 06:57

Anyone know when we hear if by email? I can't see anywhere to check online!

Virgo9 · 16/04/2015 09:05

I can't find where to look on the website either, can anyone help?

The website is having problems, when I logged in it said we didn't have any applications (which aged me 5 years). I rang them and they said the IT team are looking into the problem. The phones lines are very busy too as I think everyone is having issues.

LocalEditorCambridge · 16/04/2015 10:44

My friend couldn't log on either and has gone to work not knowing...

Last thing you need - stressing & waiting.

Sending my best vibes & good luck to you all.

We've just checked the website, and found that we haven't been offered places in ANY of our three choices, including our catchment school. Instead, we've been allocated to a school which is 1.5 miles away and rated inadequate by Ofsted. We're pretty gutted - in shock actually. Apparently this happened to fewer than 3% of children this year, so this is incredibly unlucky. Don't know what to do...

WilderRose · 16/04/2015 11:27

Gosh philosikos, that does sound odd.
If you hadn't put down your catchment school I wouldn't be so surprised.
Were the other schools on your list closer than school you have been offered?
I didn't think there were any 'inadequate' primary schools in Cambridge.

LocalEditorCambridge · 16/04/2015 14:18

philo

I'm so sorry - I know how you must be feeling today as I was one of the 3% last year too - and allocated a school over 2miles away also rated inadequate. I have been through the appeal system too. DM me or reply on this thread with any questions if you want to.

We got first choice (Queen Emma). So pleased.

EverybodysGoneSurfing · 16/04/2015 19:20

Sorry to hear you didn't Philo- sorry, posted too early!

philosikos · 16/04/2015 21:45

Thanks everyone. Just to say that my heart-attack was slightly premature. The school we were allocated to was rated 'inadequate' in 2013, but was 'good' in its 2014 report. We're still a bit gutted though, and think we might have room for an appeal as we think there might have been a mistake.

Thanks for the offer Emilie - I'm going to make some phone calls tomorrow, and then may DM you with some questions, if that's ok?

FurlaBag · 17/04/2015 08:28

Some interesting results this year! I'm keeping a close eye as I'll have to apply for a reception place next year.
Queen Emma was not oversubscribed Hmm
Places remaining
Overall it seems like the really popular schools weren't as oversubscribed as last year?

niminypiminy · 17/04/2015 10:20

Philosikos, the school you were allocated to wasn't Abbey Meadows by any chance was it? If so both my children have been there from reception and the eldest is now in yr 6. I think really, really highly of it.

The reception teachers are so good that they have been asked to share their expertise with other schools in the area. Why not go and have a look before you start with the whole appeal thing?

WilderRose · 17/04/2015 11:59

I agree with niminypiminy
My children are not at Abbey Meadows but I hear great things of it.
If that is the school please visit it.
Also if not that school, still visit and chat about your concerns.
Good luck.

LocalEditorCambridge · 17/04/2015 16:47

Absolutely - DM any questions

Really hope it all works out.

Based on what has happened to the schools where we are (not Cambridge but close enough that this is my 'local' site) a school on the up has as much chance of being a good/great school for the duration of primary as one that is currently outstanding or whatever they are graded at the moment. The 'first pick' one in our area was insanely oversubscribed 5-10 years ago but has had a worse Ofsted than the others last year, the one that was inadequate during that period has upped its game massively and is now pretty good, the 'ok' one is currently the 'first pick' from what I can now make out...

Changes in heads and leadership/governors make a massive difference, if they've improved from inadequate to good in a year that could be very positive.

I'd also go on overall impressions, not purely Ofsted scores, we liked the 'middle one' in our location the best when we were looking, the 'first pick' one didn't feel that great to me as it felt very 'well of course you'll want to come here, why wouldn't you and why should we need to answer any questions or make any effort to let you see us'
