Good luck! 16th April is National Offers Day (for primary school 'Reception' places for September 2015)

This time last year, the Daily Telegraph described it thus: 'stress, anxiety, mayhem: it must be (primary school Reception places) offers day.' This Thursday (if you applied online, otherwise expect a letter in the post a day or two later), thousands of parents will receive notification of where their children will attend school - Reception intake - in the new academic year starting in September 2015.

As those of you who've been thro' the process will know, applying for any school place these days can seem a bit of a lottery. Increasingly so since the the onset of the 'Noughties' 'baby boom' (which still shows no sign of slowing down) placed increased pressure on school places, and with some parents (where demand outstrips 'supply' of places at the most sought-after schools) resorting to subterfuge to ensure their child(ren) gets a place at their preferred choice school.

Many Councils (particularly within London and other major UK cities) have made great strides in their arrangements to meet this additional demand. 'Bulge classes' are now commonplace, with many four year olds entering Reception in a year group of some 60 - 90 pupils. Indeed, many of Merton's primaries are two if not three-form entry at Reception entry point.

Information on what to do next can be found in Merton Council's Starting Primary School 2015 prospectus (page 29 onwards).

We've started this thread to give you, local parents, the chance to share your news and views about the process of applying, the lowdown on local schools, your outcomes on Thursday, changes you've witnessed over the years and elsewhere etc...

In the meantime, good luck!

By now you will have received notification (either via email or letter) of your child's Reception place offer from Merton Council (or possibly neighbouring Wandsworth, Kingston, Sutton or even Lambeth ones, depending on whereabouts in the borough you live).

A detailed breakdown of applications and offers for Merton schools for September 2015 Reception entry can be found here, although faith and free/academy schools rank their own pupils and you will have to contact the schools directly for further information about how places were allocated.

School admissions figures, published this week by the Pan-London Admissions Board, show Merton has offered 90% of families a place for their child at one of their top three preferred choice primary schools, with first preference offers up by 4% (on last year) to 81.4% (just ahead of the current London average of 81%).

In total, more than 2,700 children have been offered a place in Merton's schools, with 2,198 getting into their first choice.

Yvette Stanley (Merton Council's Director of Children, Schools and Families Department) said: "There is still a huge demand for primary school places, but the figures show that our investment in our school expansion programme...is resulting in more children being able to go to their preferred schools. We are committed to continuing our work to ensure that every child in the borough can go to an excellent primary school near to where they live, giving them a good start in life."

Merton Council's Applying for a Reception place at a primary school page also gives up-to-date information (currently accurate as of 16 April 2015) - you will need to scroll down though - on schools with vacancies or short waiting lists for September 2015 Reception intake.
