moving to York

Hello all, we would like to move to York within the next year.
We currently rent in north London (where I have lived for the last 17 years) but I am from Yorkshire originally and would like to move back closer to family. There is also no way we are ever going to be able to buy a house where we are now as the prices on even a 2 bed flat are way over our budget Sad
I have read various threads on here about Tang Hall being quite rough but with our budget being small (and coming from quite a rough area of London) it is looking like a good option for us. Also would like DD1 to go to Archbishops Holgate's for secondary as the schools I've looked at in other affordable areas (York High, Cannon Lee) don't seem to have such great reviews?!
Although our area of London is quite rough, parts of it are coming up, it has a lovely community feel, and we have some really good secondaries near by so don't want to move and her end up in a bad school.
I'm in a bit of a stress about it all!! I have a friend who has just moved to York and loves it but she doesn't have children so her move was a little easier.
If only we had a bigger budget!!
Any help/opinions would be most welcome!

Hi. I have lived in york for many years and tbh, Tang hall is not an area i would choose to live, especially with teenagers. Though it is better than some areas of York like Bell farm, but not much. It might be worth your while to look at some of the villages just outside york such as haxby, as there are great transport links to the centre and the houses are slighty more affordable. Acomb is also getting better, and there are a coulpe of nice areas there now. Many students get school transport from the villages to school. Archbishops is a really good school but Cannon Lee is awful.

Hope this helps

elmocat, Fulford school is amazing and well worth trying to get into catchment for, its the reason we stayed in Fulford. Instead of buying a better house elsewhere. The catchment areas will be changing soon though, as there are new developemrns being built, so the closer you move the better.

Hope this helps

Thanks toryork, that's useful to know.. Don't want to spend a fortune on a house and then find it's not in the catchment after all! Any ideas which villages are going to get pushed out? We are considering some of the ones on the edge so think it might be ringing the powers that be and checking! Thanks again:)

Im not sure how tight they will make thecatchment as there is a big housing dvelopment being built in Fulford. I think dunnington and villages like that will still be fine as they are expanding the school. I hope you love York and youre very happy here
