Petition to support proposed new girls senior school

As many of you will know, Broomwood Hall has acquired premises which will allow it to open a small senior school for girls (up to 120 girls aged 13 to 16) at the far end of our garden at 74 Nightingale Lane. We are petitioning for the decision by Wandsworth on change of use to be overturned. There will be a Public Inquiry on 28 and 29 April at which we will make our case that the loss of 13 bedsits at Rayne House is more than compensated for by providing a secondary school for the benefit of our local community. If you support the need for a local secondary school can I please urge you to sign our on-line petition on:

... e-petition

This petition is open to all comers, not just Broomwood parents so feel free to share the link with others who see the need for more local places at senior school level; all signatories are welcome. You are also invited to join us at the Public Inquiry on 28 and 29 April at 213 Balham High Road SW17 7BQ.

Carole Jenkinson
Head of Broomwood Hall Upper Schoo

I hope you are successful! Any new secondary school is definitely welcome in the area.

Exactly how does a very expensive fee-paying school run as a profit-making business benefit the local community Hmm

CaptainNjork · 10/03/2015 13:52

Well from a straight economics point of view, by providing jobs for locals and buying goods and services from other local businesses LidoLil.

Plus there is a shortage of secondary places across the board (or will be very soon given the increase birth rate in recently - just look at the primaries).

I'm perfectly well aware of the shortage of school places (although I don't believe all the state schools are oversubscribed). However I do think the wording of your original post is disingenuous to say the least. I think if you made it clear that this is not a state-funded free school being set up to benefit all local children then you'd be getting quite a bit less support ...

CaptainNjork · 10/03/2015 18:36

Should have made it clear but I don't work for the school - I just cut and pasted an e-mail I got about it because I thought people might be interested. As it was a mailshot to people who are on the school's mailing list it assumes knowledge that the school is a private one. I should probably have added some explanation but couldn't be bothered was posting on phone. Anyone clicking the link is taken to a page with much more info so I doubt anyone who has signed hasn't known this is an independent school.

I still think a private senior school will ease pressure on places at states too plus as above it is good for the local economy in the same way any business is.

Surely everyone knows Broomwood Hall is a private school Wink certainly no mistaking the uniforms for state school ones - knickerbockers and straw hats!
