Hello. I'm at the stage of thinking about primary schools. We are in the catchment for Oxgangs primary but I don't know anyone with kids there. A lot of kids in my area seem to go to one of the independent schools, so I can't tell if the local primary has good links with the community (Craiglockhart). Does anyone have any direct experience of the school that they could share? I've heard some good things about it but only second-hand. From speaking to people it seems like placement requests for eg craiglockhart primary will get turned down automatically. Thanks.

Hi - I have two children at Oxgangs PS - one in P4 and one in P2. So far we have been really happy with the School. Good community feel, kids getting on well, learning lots and happy! The school building is only about 10 years old and has lots of outdoor space. Some schools in Edinburgh seem very short on playground space. The head teacher and teaching staff seem committed and open to trying new things and getting pupil and parent involvement in initiatives. There is a breakfast club and an After School Club. I like the fact that we are at our local school. I went to private school in Edinburgh and never lived near my school and I really like the fact we can be part of the walk to and from the school. Before my eldest started at the school, we went for a visit - perhaps you could do the same.

Thanks very much for that detailed feedback Tatatata. I'm really encouraged by what you've said about the school leadership and environment and it's great to hear how happy your children are there. You hear so much about some of the other south Edinburgh primary schoolsone of which I went tobut I was struggling to find out much about Oxgangs. I will do as you suggest and arrange a visit asap. Thanks again and best wishes.

I know a few mums with children at Oxgangs and they are all really happy with the school although one child had a class with some very dominant boys who put less dominant children off doing things.

Thanks for that Nospringflower. It would be good to know if the case you mentioned was actual bullying or just a case of some very confident children crowding out the less confident ones, and how the class teacher dealt with it. Bullying is the thing that worries me most, whichever school it happens in. Thanks again.

It wasn't bullying. More that some children were more dominant and so influenced the children for example if they thought you shouldn't play football then the others thought you shouldn't play football. As I said though I know a few parents who have all been really happy.

Ah, ok, I see what you mean. Thanks for that response. I will go and visit the school for myself I think. It's good to hear of people whose kids are happy there. I was just a bit nervous as I couldn't seem to find anyone who had experience of it. Thanks again.

I've done some work in oxgangs and thought it was a lovely school, well mannered children and friendly staff
