Lane End?

Hi,

New to this so bare with me. My husband works in Windsor and currently we live in Bracknell but looking to move to South Bucks. Our motivation is wanting better schools, a nicer area (very chavy where we currently live) and possibly something a bit more rural although we're open on this. We've seen a house that we absolutely love on the edge of Lane End (I actually think it's Bolter End, but have been assured it's Lane End). I've mentioned it to a few people and I've already had 2 people tell me that Lane End isn't what you think it is and if our motivation is to move to a nicer area with less chavs, then Lane End isn't it. I really didn't get that impression from looking around the village, but then I wasn't there that long. What are people's opinions?

We're also viewing in Marlow, Cookham (although this is really out of our price range), not sure where else really. Bourne End was disappointing. We really want somewhere picturesque. A village/stroke small town feel. What are people's opinions. Thanks

Not Lane End. Wheeler End? Stokenchurch? Piddington? Flackwell Heath? Freith?

The school in Lane End is not great and as a village I don't actually think it offers a lot.

Marlow and Bourne End are very much towns though.

Thank you. So you're saying avoid Lane End, but Wheeler End, Stokenchurch etc are OK? We had lunch in the pub in Lane End today and it seemed OK, but I guess visiting and living are 2 different things. My concern with Wheeler End is it's proximity to the motorway, but then I guess where in the village you are.

If you want a good primary then Lane End is not for you. I find it a funny old place. On the one hand it's very expensive to live with some big houses. On the other it has a huge estate and the school is not the best. I always assume that the rich people send their children private! Personally I don't like Lane End because it doesn't seem to have much. You would have to drive to get to anything but it doesn't for me have that village feel.

Wheeler End catchment is West Wycombe school. Stokenchurch School is Outstanding.

Are you choosing bucks for the grammar school system?

sarahq69 · 14/02/2015 21:26

Not necessarily. We just want to live in a nicer area. The school my son is at is fine, but it's mostly attended by chavs and his behaviour has gone down hill since being there. It's about being in an area where there are more 'normal' people, if that makes sense.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

Have a look at Flackwell Heath. Nice schools, nice village. More stuff going on. About 40 minutes from Windsor I reckon.

Or Stokenchurch is more affordable. On the M40. Outstanding school. Miles of walking.

OK. Thank you

Lane end is very mixed, lots of lovely houses and people and some deprivation too. I think the comments about the school are possibly a little outdated. A new head teacher joined 3 years ago and the school has gone from strength to strength. They had an ofsted inpection last year which found it good and they particularly comment that the children were very well behaved. I read in BFP recently that they won an award and they seem to be investing in the facilities. Some of the 'lovely' village schools in the surrounding area are much more reliant on parents getting tutors for their children.
