Newly pregnant, new to Glasgow

Hi all!
I am 5.5 weeks pregnant with my first child (age 34 - will be 35 when delivering) and looking for some advice.
I am not from Glasgow and only moved here 4 months ago so don't know many people - let alone any who are/have recently been pregnant. When the doctor asked me which maternity hospital I would like to be referred to I had absolutely no clue. Is there one that is better than the other (I think she said Southern and is it the Royal Infirmary)?
Any other tips gratefully received :)

Thanks :)

Hi Deirdre. Congratulations on your pregnancy and welcome to Glasgow! I had my son at Southern General and it was a very positive experience. The maternity wing was very new at the time (late 2010), in fact some of it was still under construction from what I remember but it was well equipped and the staff were lovely. Parking was difficult but I think they have since enlarged the car park but its reasonably easy to get to on public transport, depending of course on where you live. I don't have any experience of the Infirmary so I can't comment on that.

Hi there....I looked into the differences between the two hosts A LOT.....from what I could gather not much diff and I work on an NHS ward myself. I had my daughter last August at the Southern....new labour suites are great and midwives were fantastic....if you wanna ask anything you are welcome to message me.

If you are after a midwife led unit then do consider Royal Alexandra in Paisley too- anyone in Glasgow can go there if they wish. Even after you have booked in it is fine to change to another hospital so don't feel that you have to decide straight away!

I am an NCT teacher in Glasgow, find our FB page as we have free coffee groups both south and west end for meeting other mums, as well as our paid-for antenatal courses.

Hi Dierdre,

I am in a similar position to you in as much as I am reasonable newly pregnant 7+5 and I was unsure where to go as I am the first from my close friends to become pregnant.

I have chosen the Princess Royal for 3 reasons, firstly one of my work friends gave birth there and said it was good. Secondly, rightly or wrongly reviews on netmums weren't great for the southern, although I think people like to moan sometimes... And thirdly I live in the west end so generally if you are in the north of the city you go to a 'north' hospital and if you are in the 'south' you go to the southern.

TBH though still a bit confused... I originally chose the southern then phoned the next day to change it to the Princess Royal!

Sorry I realise I haven't helped at all!

I will see what the midwife says.

When are you due? I am due on 18th Oct.

xx

Hi Deirdre,

Welcome to Glasgow, I hope you're settling in. I'm due in early October with my first. I just assumed I'd go to the Southern as I'm in the West End and it'll be 10 mins max through the Clyde Tunnel. My sister-in-law delivered in the Southern last year and had no complaints. I should probably be doing far more research but so far I'm distracting myself with nonsense like Baby Loves Disco events. I've got my first midwife appt next week so I'm hoping for a bit of a steer on what I should be thinking about. One thing I have done though is sign us up for Antenatal classes with NCT in August

I'm looking to start going to aquanatal swimming classes at Scotstoun if you'd like to come along (Tuesdays@1915). PM me if you fancy it. I'm finding it a bit awkward trying to keep the news under my hat until my scan so I would be happy (relieved) to compare notes with someone in the same boat.

I gave birth at the southern in 2010 and the labour suite was lovely and new then. The wards weren't new but I think that these have now been upgraded/moved. I had to have an emergency CS but the staff were all amazing and when we decide to have DC2 I will definitely choose the Southern again.

The Princess Royal is actually further than the Southern from the west end and because it is so near town the traffic can be bad and parking difficult, I think you actually have to pay to park in the hospital.

My sis in law chose the Princess Royal but she thinks the Southern is a better hospital with a better maternity unit but as a nurse working at the Southern (not on maternity ward) she wanted to avoid any staff who knew her!

oneballyhoobird · 23/03/2015 18:48

I'm in the west end and went to the princess royal. I had a fab experience, highly recommend it.

Grumblemum · 23/03/2015 19:38

Hi Deirdre

I went to the Southern General in 2011 and I'm vaguely aware that the new birthing suites were lovely, but I was only in there for about an hour and a half with full on progress after being induced so it's all a bit of a blurr!

Where I spent the most time was on the post birth maternity ward which wasn't new and swanky like the birthing suites and in fact was very overcrowded and pretty unpleasant. Six mothers with newborns in a room together does not make for a restful time! I couldn't wait to get out and go home to peace and quite but I may have just been unlucky and hit a busy time.

My sister who lives in the West End went to the midwife led unit at the Princess Royal for both of her births and had really positive experiences. I would have gone there too for my second if I hadn't had a complicated pregnancy.

Hi everyone
I'm in a similar position myself, 15 weeks pregnant (due 13th sept) and originally from down south so no family support up here and looking to meet pregnant or new mums for coffee, activities and a chinwag! I live in the west end, I'm 37 and this is my first baby eeeek!! Hope to hear from you soon! XSmile

KHM0610 · 29/03/2015 18:32

Hi everyone,

I'm in Glasgow due with my first in early October also. Maybe we can start a Glasgow Sept-Nov group for meet ups, etc? Is it easier to do this on Facebook? I've just joined Mumsnet & so far not finding it that easy to navigate!

I'm surprised you've been given a choice Deirdre! I was just referred to the Western & just had my scan at Southern General. There's still a lot of building work going on but think the main maternity unit is alright. x

Lsmith78 · 29/03/2015 19:49

Great idea, think we should set up our own meet ups! I'm on Facebook but no idea how you set up a group thingy!? Buf happy to join it if you do set one up ??

KHM0610 · 29/03/2015 19:59

Hi Lsmith78 & everyone else in this thread,

I've setup a Glasgow secret baby group on Facebook. PM me your Facebook URL and I'll add you! x

FCEK · 01/04/2015 20:01

I'm 34 but not pregnant and no intention to have another.

Sad that all the meetups are mums with babies and nothing for mums of older kids!

prettybird · 02/04/2015 14:43

They most definitely are NOT! Smile

I've organised a number of meetups in Glasgow. Usually it's just cake, coffee and nattering! In fact, the last two, I was the only one who turned up (to be fair, they were relatively short notice).

My ds is 14 and of the current bunch of Central Belt MNers who've been meeting up (we're also "Woolly Huggers", so had the MN Woolly Hugs in common), most of us have teenagers and/or primary age kids, the youngest is at nursery.

As one of the MN Local Ambassadors, I need to organise another one (last one was mid March). Probably another daytime weekday one but we should probably also think of an evening one where one or two of us might partake of a drink or two Wink

prettybird · 02/04/2015 14:43

Also meant to say that not all of us have kids either! Smile

Littleone25 · 07/04/2015 19:16

Hi Deirdre ! Congratulations and welcome to Glasgow, I'm due in December too. Where abouts do you stay ( sorry I'm sure you've already mentioned it in the thread somewhere)

I did my midwifery training in Paisley ( RAH) and honestly can't speak highly enough of the team there the community birthing suite is fantastic and the midwives are all lovely. I'm now a business manager for obs and gyn In the southern and the consultants are fantastic but tbh I'd still recommend the RAH because it's smaller there's better chance of one to one care throughout your whole pregnancy x

lauraam2001 · 20/04/2015 20:45

Congratulations and welcome to Glasgow! I'm due with my first on 13 September & off to the Southern. Got referred there for scans & the main event & the Western for appointments...
Would love to meet up with other mums/mums to be in Glasgow.

Candice27 · 21/05/2015 10:38

Hello Ladies.

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have just moved South of Glasgow. Is anyone interested in meeting up for coffee, shopping, walks etc Southaide or in Central? X Candice

Hi all,

I'm 24 weeks pregnant with baby number 1. Grin Would love to meet up with people due around the same time. I've just moved up from London (Ealing area) and so still registered to give birth in London as much of my close family lives there.

I have been tempted to transfer to the RAH but still gathering info! Might be a bit late now but looking to connect with seasoned mums and mums in Glasgow/Ayrshire that are due around the same time as we will be needing support from each other!

Laura x

Candice27 · 26/05/2015 17:12

Hello Laura!
Congratulations on your pregnancy and welcome to Glasgow!
It will be lovely to meet up sometime.
I've just moved up from West Sussex. It would be nice to meet other pregnant women as I'm new to the area.
It won't be too late to transfer as I'm now registered to give birth at the Southern hospital. Have my first appointment with the midwife on Midwife.
Might be a good idea to meet up in Central
X Candice
