Where to live?

Moving back to the UK in August as my 16 yr old son is hopefully going to Noel Baker School in Alvaston in September (for the basketball accademy).
To start we will be staying with family in Ilkeston but will be looking to rent a place nearer school once I get a job.
I have heard bad things about Alvaston and mixed about Chellaston, I really would like Duffield area but again it would involve a big journey to school.
Any ideas ? Would need to be able to get to school either on foot/bike or by bus, or bus into Derby then another over to school.
Up to now we have been living in a small village in Mallorca so not really used to big built up bussling areas.
Thanks

I wouldnt recommend Alvaston at all either. We live in Borrowash which is a village more or less within Derby. Our eldest goes to secondary school on the service bus. We too dont like built up areas. You want to google 'Borrowash'.

thanks, had a look, it looks good but would also involve him getting into Derby then out again to get to school.:-( Belper seems about the best bet I think, he can use either train or bus to get into Derby, so in theory the journey would be less time consuming and there is more option. I have a brother who lives near Belper too.

Well it's all going ahead, flights booked for 14th July... DS has a place at Derby College so will be staying with mum in Ilkeston to start with, then looking to move nearer the Campus at The Roundhouse, Pride Park maybe ? or areas around there, also looked at Spondon. Any NO GO areas we should avoid? Also seeing that most of the places tend to say no pets.... we have dogs so getting a bit worried about not being able to bring them with us. Any advice or ideas ?
Thanks

Dd the ds get into the basketball academy? I know from media reports their under 17 team did very well ( national champions maybe) from memory. If so Shelton lock, Chellaston are all easy distances by bus or bicycle from there.
Is Stenson Fields ( new housing area) an option as think buses run to pride park area? Good for rental. Or further into the city Littleover - buy busy due to hospital nearby. Areas between Alvaston and Littlwover may be worth looking at - as near Pride Park area too. Lots of new houses being built on edge of Chellaston. If not wanting Chellaston schooling might be worth looking there but out of catchment?

CantwaittilFriday · 03/04/2015 22:33

Personally I would choose to avoid areas such as: Normanton, Osmaston, Pear Tree, Allenton, parts of Sinfin - having rented there many years ago so may be out of date information.

Do you have other children for schools to consider?

JackieLL · 05/04/2015 13:54

Yes DS got in the basketball academy, he is doing a year at Derby College to get his English up to scratch then over to Noel Baker for ICT. He speaks fluent English but has always been to Spanish schools so his academic level of English is that of a second language really (bit higher obviously but he won't have a GCSE qualification for A-levels.
Really excited.... we are looking toward Pride Park I think as lots of his training is going to be at The Roundhouse Campus. Chellaston sounds good, not looked at littleover though, will have a peek.

Thanks for the advice.
Jackie

Oh well done to your son!
I guess he can do A level Spaniah without too much difficulty as well as an option!
Shelton Lock and Chellaston are both near Alvaston if you do not want to be in Alvaston itself. Good buses to Pride Park from there also which may help!

CantwaittilFriday · 05/04/2015 18:02

Spanish it should say!

I would much prefer to live in Chellaston than Pride Park.

Or if you were to live in Findern, he could ride his bike along the canal. It gets quite muddy in the winter though.

SevenAteNine · 29/04/2015 22:58

*Findern is lovely, and not that expensive.

JackieLL · 30/04/2015 18:21

Findern looks lovely but a bit far out, not sure about him riding round on a bike late at night on the way home from training. Any ideas on Oakwood, been past loads of times but never into it.

A bit cabbagey and nondescript. One of the biggest housing estates in all of Europe.

I wouldn't fancy it, personally.

How about Allestree?

JackieLL · 01/05/2015 09:16

Allestree and Belper area were my first choices, but I have told getting into Derby in a morning from that area is really bad. I keep coming back to Chellaston !

They are both really well served by public transport.

Chellaston isn't bad.
