Moving to Oxfordshire

Dear all,
I am currently living in Wimbledon with my two children (7 and 5) and my DH and we want to start a new life outside of London. I grew up in London so I do not know a lot about other places. We want to live somewhere in the countryside perhaps in a small village but still with a reasonable amount of shops nearby. DH needs a commute into London so there needs to be a train. Our budget for the move £1m so money is not an issue. Any help greatly appreciated :)
Thanks x

Hi
Oxfordshire is a lovely county and a good place to live and bring up a family. There are pretty villages - interesting market towns and of course the super City of Oxford itself. With regards to access to the commute to London - there are many good rail links - both into Paddington or Marylebone - where is your husband's work located? Schools will obviously be important to you and Oxfordshire is renown for its choice of good schools - both in the private and state sectors. It is always a big step to move and to start afresh somewhere new but we are very experienced in helping families find the right home - in the right location - at the right time! Do have a look at our website www.move-forward.co.uk and if you feel like to contact us for a exploratory chat - please do.

We moved to Oxfordshire from Wimbledon two years ago. We haven't regretted it, but one thing you have to swallow is the fact that house prices in London are constantly in the news, and going up faster than everywhere else ... Even Oxford hot spots! So get ready for that ... It's in the news weekly and you can't avoid it.

Having said that we love it here.

Downsides are being tarred with the ' from London' brush by some people; the roads are awful both in quality and in congestion terms ... Worse than the S Circular! ....I have missed the buzz of London and do go up a bit when I can, but that urge is lessening... Oxford has a buzz ....

Upsides. Well, just plain quality of life. Space. Calmness. People have more time to chat and be pleasant. My child enjoys the outdoors much more, and there is less hysteria around schools! You can wander around the Cotswolds at weekends easily. Bit of a change from Richmond Park.

Think hard if you want village or town ... I've found the change to village hard. Even if the people are nice, there is a bit of nosiness which after the anonymity of Wimbledon can be irritating, or even feel interfering. I might adapt to it as there are upsides, like being part of a community, and being invite round to strangers houses. But the jury is out on that.

Didcot is good for commuting. Downside is the town itself is nothing to write home about. Some of the villages are lovely, but costly. You might be surprised how expensive the nice villages actually are. There are lots of London relocators which keeps prices quite high!

Blewbury, East Hendred ..... Very nice.

Look at senior schools first though and really do your homework ... We have ended up in a bit of a mess having not done that properly! No good buying and then finding your first choice of senior school is an hour and a half away by school bus ... Or worse in your car!

Good Luck. It's difficult but we believe worth it in the end!

(I apologise in advance if I'm doing this wrong, this is my first time trying to post things, but I've ping-ponged around Oxfordshire for a decade or so and might be able to help, so I'll see if this works...)

Kidlington might suit you? About 6 miles out of Oxford city centre. The Oxford Parkway train station is due to open on the edge of Kidlington this summer and Chiltern Railways reckon they'll be running trains that get you to Marylebone in 45 minutes. Any of the villages around Kidlington - Yarnton or Bladon or Islip - would suit you. Eye-watering if you haven't got the capital but it sounds like you're OK on that score!

Kidlington and Islip are also handy for the A34 which becomes relevant if you ever want to drive anywhere: if you're heading up to the M40 you don't have to get past Oxford and Botley first!

Try not to go for anywhere where the main commuter access to the train station will take you down the A40 from Witney to Oxford, that gets congested like there's no tomorrow at peak hours.

The alternative for fast trains to London is probably somewhere around Didcot (also 45 mins, FGW into Paddington rather than Chiltern line).

Wallingford is a lovely little town handy for Didcot, right on the Thames, very nice community feel to it, and Brightwell or Cholsey are nice villages in the same sort of area (Cholsey is on the main line, but the fast trains don't stop there).

Hope that's some help!
