Moving to Cambridgeshire

Dear all,
I am currently living in Wimbledon with my two children (7 and 5) and my DH and we want to start a new life outside of London. I grew up in London so I do not know a lot about other places. We want to live somewhere in the countryside perhaps in a small village but still with a reasonable amount of shops nearby. DH needs a commute into London so there needs to be a train. Our budget for the move £1m so money is not an issue. Any help greatly appreciated :)
Thanks x

Hi,

I would check out villages close to Huntington or St Neots as they both have easy access train stations. Kimbolton could be woth looking at.

How far away from a train station would you be prepared to live? The train from St Neots or Huntingdon is very good into London, but neither of those towns are very big.

Personally, I'd live closer to Cambridge, so that there's access to lots of cultural stuff, but there's a longer drive to the station. That's what we've done, although dh only has to go to Londin once or twice a week. We live in a village about 15 minutes drive from Cambridge, 20 minutes drive to either St Neots or Royston station.

For a small city, Cambridge has got a lot to offer. Theatre, museums, art galleries, concerts, shops etc. My dc are now teens and go into Cambridge a lot at weekends and evenings to see bands, or go shopping. I think that they would have struggled a bit if our nearest town was as small as St Neots, for example.

There are some nice villages between Cambridge and Huntingdon (and between St Neots and Cambridge) if you want to be close to Cambridge but also the East coast mainline. The Hemingfords are lovely. There are villages along the guided busway that are rural but you can be in Cambridge pretty quickly if you want to go to the theatre etc. Mind you, I live north of Huntingdon and I can be in Cambridge within half an hour if the A14 is clear (cue laughter from everyone who's ever driven on that bit of the A14).

I live in north Cambridgeshire, little village not far from Huntingdon. moved from London a while ago. We have some hills here & I think makes a huge difference. Primary good. We live half way between Cambridge & Peterborough.

Ooh, I bet you live near me then, LucyLight.

Very belatedly....probably!

We are probably moving to Cambridgeshire from Sweden!! (We have lived here nearly 8 years). A very scary move, neither us have lived there before :-/ Miss the UK very much and Cambridgeshire looks like a really lovely and family friendly county, we have 3 small children.....
Just waiting for the final job offer....
Any recommendations where to live would be great, we were looking at St Ives but maybe nicer to be nearer Cambridge......not in Camb we can't afford the house prices......
Thanks!
