Enjoy the view from the UK's tallest sculpture, the ArcelorMittal Orbit, with Father Christmas this December. For the very first time the world's most celebrated man in red, will be visiting London's most iconic red landmark, bringing all his festive cheer, and his trusty reindeer, with him.

On selected dates in December, Father Christmas and his reindeer will be in residence to meet children and their families. Begin your festive visit by meeting Santa's famous friends as they rest before their epic flight on 25th December. Then take a journey 80m to the top of the sculpture to meet the man himself and admire views of up to 20 miles across London and the iconic sporting venues of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. There will also be art and craft activities to enjoy, seasonal surprises and local carol singers dropping by. Christmas activities take place from 12pm - 4 pm on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 December – 24 December and are included in the standard entry price.

We were lucky enough to win a family ticket to go up the ArcelorMittal Orbit (thank you), although due to social commitments before Christmas, we opted for a Father Christmas (and reindeer)- free visit over the holiday period.

As with a recent trip up The Shard, I couldn't have been more impressed with the friendly professionalism of the young team overseeing our visit.

It was relatively quiet when we went so we had no jostling for position to admire the view or queueing to go up in the lift etc.... It was almost over-sunny though (is that possible???) which meant seeing landmarks in the distance wasn't terribly easy. Again as with all these experiences, a night-time visit would offer a different and possibly more magical vista across London and the Home Counties!

It was actually a beautifully still and not overly cold day when we went up the Orbit, so going outside on to the very wide and secure viewing platform was a very pleasant experience. It was a stark contrast to the time we went up The Monument when it was blowing a gale and the platform was so narrow one was hugging the structure to feel safe (although I'm slightly over-dramatising!).

We all loved it but we were only up there a maximum of thirty minutes so not entirely convinced that it represented good value for money for a family. Not convinced that we would choose to pay £40 for a family ticket for the privilege, great as the experience was.

Incidentally the Olympic Park was very peaceful (in stark contrast to Westfield Stratford) and loads of youngsters were out trying out their electric scooters, rollerblades and skateboards - perfect spacious conditions for doing so!

All in all it was a great day out, particularly as we used the Docklands Light Railway to get there (our favourite transport method in London).
