I'm doing a feature highlighting the best things about Birmingham, to help any Mumsnetters planning to visit or move to the area.

I've got plenty of ideas of my own, but would love to draw on other peoples' wisdom. Can you name your favourite:

  • Thing about the area
  • Child-friendly café
  • Child-free night out
  • Outside space
  • Hidden gem
  • Community venues
  • Free visitor attractions
  • Day out
  • Place to live
  • Place to shop

Wine Cake Thank you! Deadline is Tuesday.

These are my ideas so far:

Best thing about the area
Birmingham has first-class theatres, live music, ballet, art, science museum, sports facilities etc but the countryside is just 20 minutes out of town.

Child-friendly café
Rowheath Pavillion? Nice play area for toddlers and very good cake.

Child-free night out
For a posh meal, Purnells. Or catch a show at the Hippodrome and then head for China Town.

Outside space
The Lickeys.

Hidden gem
Moseley Bog. Botanical Gardens

Community venues
Rowheath Pavilion

Free visitor attractions
The new Library of Birmingham

Day out
Town centre by train, walk up to Millennium Point to find Thinktank, the science museum. Enjoy the interactive exhibits, Planetarium, and at lunchtime, head outside to the Eastside Park garden with a packed lunch and let the children play on the stepping stones, the weighted swings, water-jets and other sciencey games. Head back into town for the National Trust's Back-to-Back houses or check out what's on at BMAG (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery). Supper at Nandos before boarding the train for home. (I'm looking forward to having older children who could manage this much excitement in one day!)

Place to live
Sutton Coldfield, Harborne, Bournville, Moseley and Kings Heath.

Place to shop
For high-end shopping go to Harvey Nicks at the MailBox. The Bullring is easy for high street shops. I love the Bullring Market for the fabulous fruit and veg deals (a bucket of mangos for a £1), the good-quality meat, game and fish.

  • Thing about the area - parks / eateries/loads of theatres family friendly!
  • Child-friendly café - rowheath pavilion (Bournville) , Boston tea party (Harborne), Plough (Harborne)
  • Child-free night out - Adams restaurant Bennetts Hill for amazing Michelin starred food!
  • Outside space - cannon Hill, botanical gardens,
  • Hidden gem - Winterbourne gardens by Birmingham university
  • Community venues - rowheath pavilion
  • Free visitor attractions- ditto library of Birmingham,
  • Day out - loads of NT places within 30 mins... Solihull good for a quieter shop than bullring (cinemas and good places to eat!) my kids love the sealife centre (but very very pricey!) Cadbury world! (again pricey) black Country museum great fun! Webbs of whychbold good for a mooch around!
  • Place to live - Bournville, Harborne, Kings heath
  • Place to shop - bullring for high street, Harborne for local high street, Solihull touchwood to get away from it all... A mooch around John lewis is always pleasant!

Xx

Boston Tea Party is a new one for me - I shall have to force myself to investigate Wink. The selfless dedication I give to this site is never-ending, I tell you.

Sadly the mention of Boston Tea Party came too late for the deadline, but all your suggestions were so helpful - thanks so much all.
