Hellooo fellow Cumbria people!

I'm Holmessweetholmes and I moved to Cumbria (near Milnthorpe) last month. There was quite an old thread with talk of a meet-up in Kendal. So does anyone fancy it?

I'm free Wednesay one week and Thursday the next (stupid two week teaching timetable! ) and have just discovered the delights of the Booths café. So who's in? Smile

I've never been to Booths cafe, what is this card you speak of?

See you all on Weds Brew Smile

holmessweetholmes · 14/11/2014 20:40

Booths card - you get a free coffee every time you buy a fiver or more of shopping. And I seem to get a free £15 voucher once a month too!

I don't even think you need to buy anything for the coffee?! Unless I've been being cheeky. And they also give you a free paper on weekends, which is mental seeing as my choice is almost a fiver!

Cragbound · 14/11/2014 23:01

No you don't need to buy anything to get a free coffee every day, if you want it enough to get yourself to a branch of Booths. You just apply for the card so they have you on their database, though I'm not sure what they get out of that. I think to get a free paper on Sundays you have to spend £10 that day.
Tops, have a care, it's a small community and your planks are sure to be chips off someone's old block.. Sorry, this metaphor is getting a bit stretched.

holmessweetholmes · 15/11/2014 07:35

My nearest branch of Booths is only 3 mins drive from my house and is on my way home from work, so I am in there all the time! It doesn't have a café but I have my free coffee while shopping.

I've only been in the café in the Kendal one once, but was very impressed with the food. I had a big pile of wild mushrooms with two poached eggs and tarragon hollandaise on two big slices of artisan sourdough for £5.90. Restaurant quality and probably cost me less than a boring panini and a muffin in Costa or somewhere. Plus of course the coffee was free!

You're right Cragbound, although it is a well known issue that i have heard many comment on, in a completely non-mallous way of course.

topsforshort · 15/11/2014 20:47

*non-malicious, silly correct

Wetoopere · 16/11/2014 19:02

Ooh tempted but I can't do weds and Thursdays. Possibly next semester

holmessweetholmes · 16/11/2014 22:57

Aww that's a shame, Wetoopere! Look forward to seeing you next time.

I'm in. Will have to bring baby and toddler though - will try to palm the toddler off on dh but it's unlikely!

holmessweetholmes · 17/11/2014 20:56

Fab! Looking forward to it.

Not sure if I'll make it today, have a sick little girl this morning. She's insisting on going to pre-school though so unless I convince her otherwise I'll either have to be very brief or give it a miss this time, boo.

holmessweetholmes · 19/11/2014 16:57

Lovely to meet you all today! Sorry I couldn't stay longer, but my puppy needed me! Now I need to go back over the thread to see if I can actually remember which face goes with which MN name!

OP posts:
Cragbound · 19/11/2014 21:08

I'm none the wiser about who's who on MN, except holmes, but I really enjoyed meeting you all, and your very nice children.

ElizaBennett · 19/11/2014 22:03

It was lovely to meet you all too. I have a different username on here than on the main MN so happy to out myself. I'm Jenny - the one with the shouty toddler, sicky baby and overly enthusiastic approach to teaching English Grin

Hi, My husband and I are moving to Kendal with our two boys at the end of December. Our boys are ages 5 and 3. The eldest is going to be attending Stramongate primary school (year 1) in the January term, and the youngest will be attending Brantfield nursery / Kendal pre-school. We don't know anyone in the area so it would be lovely to meet up with some mums who have kids of a similar age, and would be great to hear from anyone with kids at mentioned childcare locations. Very excited, but also very nervous about our move! x

holmessweetholmes · 23/11/2014 14:03

Hi Keddle! Whereabouts are you moving from?

OP posts:
kheddle · 23/11/2014 20:00

Hi, We are moving from Preston. My husband and I were both brought up in the Orkney Islands so seeking somewhere nicer to bring up our children, which is closer to the great outdoors.

holmessweetholmes · 23/11/2014 20:30

Well you've picked a great place! We are loving it. I like Kendal - it's our nearest proper-sized town. We are in a village on the estuary, right near Milnthorpe. We just recently had a meet-up of people from this thread, and I hope you'll join us if we manage to have another one! Smile

OP posts:
kheddle · 23/11/2014 22:07

Thanks, a meet up would be lovely. I'll keep an eye on local chat so I know when you're having the next one.

ElizaBennett · 23/11/2014 23:55

At least two of us on here have children at Brantfield. It's great. My DS loves it. Stramondgate also has a good reputation. The only negative thing I've heard about it is that parking for drop off / pick up is a nightmare!

Good luck with the move and post on here if you'd like to meet when you're settled.

kheddle · 24/11/2014 09:47

Thanks, that's great to hear. We loved it and the outside area is amazing. My little boy will be doing mornings at Brantfield so I'll hopefully see you there if your child does the same sessions. Yes, we were really impressed with Stramongate. I'm planning on walking boys to school so will just have to fight the rain and snow! :-)
