hello can anyone help??? we are thinking to move to Hitchin next year does anyone know how easy it is to get into hitchin boys school -our eldest is 9 so a couple of years off yet but would like to know whether we would have to move right next door to the school or whether we would be ok in areas further out e.g. Gosmore or St Ippolyts?? we are living overseas at the moment and a bit out of touch with all the rules and regulations - don't understand these rules 4 & 5 for instance....

Don't live in Hitchin but have read in the local paper that it's really over-subscribed and very hard to get in.

My understanding is that most of the places go to people in Hitchin itself, with some places reserved for the villages, but the villages only get a small proportion in (the number of places for the villages is proportional to the number of applications from the villages).

Do you know the Hitchin area already, or is it somewhere that you've plucked out of thin air?

It completely depends on what rule you come under for admission. For example I know a family in hitchin who was close to the boys school but it was their 2nd closest school ( by a very small distance ) the priory was classed as their closest school which was a higher rule so they were allocated priory.
Friends who live in little wymondley lived much further from the school but it was their closest school so they got a place.

All the information is on herts county council website. So when you find a house you can pop its address in to the 'nearest school calculator' this will tell you your closest schools to this address but you will need to ensure hbs is your closest to stand the best chance.

I have heard that hbs also take 'talented children'. Friends son got in because he excelled at sport for example.

I know hitchin girls have changed their rules recently and have offered more places to hitchin residents. So that's another risk you take- I guess schools can change their rules too. So to live in hitchin and have it as your closest school would give you the best chance : )

You can look at school guru - a website with loads of fab info on Herts admissions. Iirc there is a £10 fee but that's for a year. We've found it handy - no chance of Hitchin boys for us, sadly

thank you so much for your help :)

cantsleepwontsleep i think your last comment is a bit unfair. we have been working abroad for 7 years and now we are making the move back to the uk. we have been doing lots of research into where to live in hertfordshire. we used to live in barnet but we have 3 kids now and we need more space, we have relatives living in the surrounding area, we need to have good access to motorways and links into london but we don't want to move to a big town. we obviously need good schools for our kids. Hitchin is a good match and I am planning to visit next month to look at the area and houses etc. so no i have not plucked it out of thin air.

I think all cat meant was are you totally wedded to Hitchin or are you open to other areas in the commuter belt as well.

cat1310 · 23/09/2014 10:37

hi strawberries yes I'm open to other areas I'm just trying to find the right one for us. Hitchin seems a v good option for us.

You might want to look at bishops stortford as well?

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/09/2014 22:26

Oh I didn't mean it in a rude way! It's just that info I would give if you know the area is different from info I would give if you don't (eg I named a couple of villages/areas in my initial reply, but deleted them as I didn't know if they would mean anything to you).

cat1310 · 24/09/2014 05:12

ok thanks yes please tell me the villages if you can?

Have you looked at Woburn? It's actually beds / bucks. Very close to m1. Have to say I don't know much about it other than it seems a really beautiful town and is close to m1. I would imagine it has good schools.

I think you would get to m1 in luton if you lived in hitchin. However hitchin is a really nice little town. Baldock and letchworth are nice too and not far. Good luck ! X
