Ealing Council’s cabinet has agreed to invest £7.05million in providing more permanent and temporary primary places for local children.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Hanwell, will benefit from investment of £5.5million to permanently increase its September intake by an additional 30 pupils. This will allow the school to admit three classes of 30 children each year instead of two, eventually creating an extra 210 places.
Like many local schools, St Joseph’s has experienced increased demand for places and has taken a temporary class for the last two years. The funding will be used to expand the existing school buildings, subject to planning permission, to create extra learning spaces.
Mayfield Primary, also in Hanwell, is a 1.5 form entry school and currently accepts 45 new reception pupils each year. It is scheduled to be completely rebuilt under the Government’s Priority School Building Programme. However, because this funding can only be used to rebuild a school of the same capacity, cabinet has agreed to make a contribution of £1.3million to allow a bigger school to be built. This will make it a two form entry school and create an additional 105 places when full.
The school will take a temporary class this September and next September to create extra spaces until the rebuild is completed.
Pressures in Acton will also be eased with the decision to admit a temporary class at East Acton Primary for the third year in a row, taking it from a 1 form entry to a 2 form entry school.
Site constraints mean that there isn’t room for temporary accommodation at East Acton primary, so council has agreed to invest £250,000 in extending the existing building to create the extra learning spaces needed.
