Anyone live in Torpoint?

Hello,

We are relocating to Torpoint in early September (from the NE) for my husband's work. He knows the area quite well from working there, but not really in terms of amenities for us as a young family - we are both late 20s with a toddler and new baby due in a few months. I don't know a single person, eek!

I'm just wondering if anyone lives there, or knows the area, and can give me any tips on places to go and things to do? I know there's a children's centre there which we'll definitely go to, and I've found another toddler group, but not much else. Are there any children's parks? Anything else?

We'll be living just off the main road (Trevol?) and I'd love to find things within walking/short car journey distance, and not need to get the ferry into Plymouth too often?

Any info would be very much appreciated.

Thank you! X

Hi, There is a little park just in behind Trevol Road, that is presuming you are moving to the top end near to HMS Raleigh? It is just in amongst the Naval houses. it has picnic tables etc and is quite pleasant.
Torpoint itself has another park on the outskirts and has a very large grass area perfect for picnics, having a kick about with a ball or a run about with a frisbee and taking dogs for walks etc. There is also yet another park, this one is enclosed and is called St James' Park, this is close to the town centre and is a good place to go if you are visiting the shops or just fancy a detour from the ferry as it is within walking distance, it is just behind the church, you will see this as you drive up around the hill from the ferry, you will soon understand what I mean!

I am afraid Torpoint is quite a desolate place to go with not much to do. It is a place with a fair amount of walking to be done and I am afraid to say that you are moving to the outskirts of the town so go get anywhere you will be walking at least 15-20 minutes unless you take the car. For me personally I enjoy walking so it wasn't an issue for me when I lived there but it can get tiresome in the winter when it is raining, especially with a pram up and down the hills.

However, If you want to get out in the car only a short distance away you have nice little places to go such as, Antony House, Wilcove, Mount Edgecombe, Kingsand, Cawsand, Seaton, Looe etc. Obviously if you go over the ferry to Plymouth you have the City Centre and endless opportunity of places to go. A good place to take the children is an indoor soft play centre in Crownhill called JUMP, it is fantastic and is suitable for children from babies right the way up, the also have a café serving food and drinks and are open I think something like 9-6.

That aside with regards to having things for yourself and your husband to do I know that the only real place that you can go for recreational activities is the YMCA which is located on the outskirts by the secondary school. They do have a wide range I gather and have a gym etc. I do know that there is also a kick-boxing class if that is your husbands thing, I know there is also yoga. I also know that down by the St John Ambulance Hall, (its just in First road turning left and you come off the ferry) there is a little building opposite that is a little community hall that does things such as zumba, step classes, aerobics etc. Im not 100% sure on what they do at the moment as im sure things swap and chage there but it may be worth enquiring?

Sorry if I have rambled on a bit but I have tried to give you as much information as possible. If you think of anything else you would like to ask feel free to ask me.
