We are planning on moving to the Broomhill or Bearsden area (this is me trying to sound as if i have a clue about what I'm doing!) hopefully just before Christmas and I am desperate to know if there is any possibility that I can get my children into a good state school in the middle of the school year i.e. after the Christmas holidays? Is it possible?? I'm terrified I've fucked up and feel I should have had life all organised before children! Gah! I don't imagine there is anyone up but I shall bump in the morning. We aren't committed to any particular area yet. I would really appreciate if anyone knows anything!! Too many any's! Going mental and going to try and get to sleep! Thank you in advance. Smile Originally from Glasgow. By the way. A long, long time ago!

Hi

I guess the only way would be to select some schools in areas that you like and call them in August once they are back after the summer break.

I'm in south lanarkshire, my ds goes to a good catholic school and I know he has had 2 new class mates this year mid year, if that makes sense?

The only thing you'll need to work out is which year they will go into. Ds was 7 in April and is going into P3 in August.

Hello,

I think Broomhill primary has a good reputation. It tends to be full at the start of P1, but a few of the kids there are usually overflow from Jordanhill and so you might find they might have moved by Christmas and you might be lucky and get a place for your 5 year old. When are they turning 6? If it's before the end of Feb then they could go into P2. In P2 & P3 the child/teacher ratio goes up so it's generally easier to get a place. I'm not sure what the Catholic school would be - maybe Notredame?

Bearsden has had a few issues recently with worries about schools closing. So I think you'd want to check the catchment area you're moving into and if there are any changes planned.

I think the best plan would be to phone the education department/schools.

Thank you very much for all your replies. I really really appreciate it. Getting over the fear and beginning to be excited about coming back! Ach, it'll all be fine! Smile

Hi. I moved to Bearsden in April and a lot of the schools around here have a good reputation. We moved mid school year, I just e mailed the schools to see where was space. However you cannot be offered a place or do a placing request until you are resident. But if there are no spaces in your catchment school they have to offer you another place. So your children would have a school although there is a small chance it could be in different schools (although in practice I don't know if this would happen). Good luck!

I moved to Glasgow from London with a 5 year old in December 2009 - we just turned up at our catchment primary school once we were here and he was able to start on first day of term in January. Most of the schools in the west end are great although be aware that Broomhill is about to be completely rebuilt over the next couple of years. Good luck with the move!

We came last week from India to Glasgow. We have 2 boys 10 years and 7 years. Planning to join them in a good school in year 5 and year 2 respectively. Not looking for any specific area as we are new to the town. Temporarily staying in G4 0HU. We have to rent a good 2 bed room flat/apartment as well. Please suggest me good areas for schooling in Glasgow.

Appreciate any help

Don't worry about it- you can't apply for a school place until you have council tax registration in your name anyway. If you phone Hyndland Secondary and ask for the admissions person they should be able to tell you what the score is with places, and if you are concerned about the refurb at Broomhill, you could ask for a placing request for Hyndland which is equally as good.

Hyndland is generally oversubscribed but there have been plenty of people starting in the middle of terms- I don't think it will be a problem.
