Moving to Leeds - any thoughts on Carr Manor Estate (Meanwood/Moortown border)

We're moving to Leeds without knowing it at all, apart from 3 very short visits and masses of internet research. We've seen a house we like on the Carr Manor Estate on the Meanwood /Moortown border but are not sure about the area - the streets seem nice and quiet and well-kept, I really like the look of the bay-fronted houses, but I noticed a parade of shops was run-down and almost entirely closed down. Does it feel like a safe place to live? Is there much of a sense of community? Do many families live there? I haven't found a park with swings etc within walking distance on the map (is there one?) and there seems little in the way of shops and amenities (unless we just didn't drive down the right roads?) The quick bus route into the centre of town appeals to us (as dh can commute by bus) but I'm a bit concerned that I would need to rely on a car (or bus) most of the time to get anywhere with the children, which is very different from the small town we currently live in where I can get pretty much anywhere by walking. Although to be honest this is what I'm finding in most of the areas of Leeds we've been looking at so far - there doesn't seem to be much "centre" to them. Does everyone go into the city centre to shop?

Carr Manor area is not far from Meanwood , where there is a park with swings and a few ducks. The shops centre round Waitrose, with several bars and a few restaurants - East of Arcadia, Zucco and the Hungry Bear are all OK. I think Meanwood is on the up - and its not far from Headingley, which is studenty but had more shops and bars/restaurants, including my favourite Italian Salvos.(but perhaps a long walk as it is the far side of Meanwood to Carr Manor)

Thanks Artus. I noticed the Waitrose on google maps after we'd come home - I think we must have driven around in every direction except that direction! Scouting areas with two bored frustrated young children in the car is not very conducive to getting a thorough impression of an area! I was really hoping to find somewhere more easily walkable to the shops (walkable with 2 children and pushchair that is) It's difficult to know what to compromise on, there seem to be so few houses on sale in Leeds at the moment and they get snapped up so fast.

I live on this estate, and have done for 12 years - it's very quiet, people are very pleasant. The parade of shops there has been like that since I've lived here! It's a very short walk up to Chapel Allerton for shopping, which is lovely, and has a very Mediterranean feel on summer evenings. Smile

There's a little park a bit nearer on the estate off Tongue Lane that's nice - about half to three quarters of a mile away.

I live here too and love it

Admittedly there aren't many shops within easy walking distance (the small Sainsburys is more than adequate for bread/milk/emergency dinner/emergency wine) but 5 minutes drive and you have Chapel Allerton, Meanwood (the park is great and Zucco is my favourite restaurant in all of Leeds), Headingley, Moortown (including the huge Sainsburys) and Roundhay (gigantic park + Timoney's cafe is amazing).

It's safe and friendly and handy for town. The school is great and couldn't be easier to get to.

I used to live in Armley which had it's own little street of shops (I miss Wilkos and Superdrug) but it also had burglars, street fights and at one point, a knocking shop across the road from our house, so I was happy to compromise on the shops in the end Grin.

Chapel Allerton is 5 mins walk from Wensley Drive where I live (the Carr Manor Side) Believe me, I am not known for my walking prowess but it's just a short walk up the rest of Wensley Drive and you're there!

Thanks for these replies - this is all reassuring and good to know!
