This year’s Independent Booksellers Week takes place from 28th June-5th July - a true celebration of independent bookshops nationwide and the important part they play in their communities, plus their excellent personal service and in-depth knowledge on a whole range of genres. IBW gives parents the perfect chance to help their children discover more about their local bookshop with a programme of events promoting children's reading across the UK. Chapter One Bookshop in Woodley is one the participating Independent bookshops in our local area, and to celebrate the week they have put together their top-five recommended summer reads for kinds of all ages:

The Dragonsitter Disasters by Josh Lacey
£6.99 Age 7+
When Uncle Morton goes away for a week his pet dragon is left with his nephew Eddie. Soon Eddie's house is in a state of chaos with an empty fridge, burnt curtains and Mum at the end of her tether. This book is terrific value with three stories about Eddie and the dragon. The stories are written as a series of emails with illustrations adding to the fun. A great choice for holiday reading which should tempt the most reluctant reader.

Soon she is taken in the night and Sylvan realises he must lead his siblings away and search for a new home. The story of their journey is exciting and gripping but also sad. The illustrations by Simon Mendez give a wonderful, visual description of the riverbank. A brilliant first novel by ecologist Tom Moorhouse.
