Moving to Letchworth?

Hello, my husband and I and our 2 children are looking to move to Letchworth.
I was just wondering if there were any other parents on here who live in the area?
I would just like to know a little more about the area from people who actually live there, for instance are there any parts to really avoid looking at houses in?
The schools etc.
Any information / guidance would be greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

We live in letchworth and have done for about 10 years. We have a 3 year old lo. We really like living here. The primary / infant schools are generally good. Some. Better than others like most towns really. We live on the north side of town nr norton ccmmon . The primaries this side of town are mainly placed on the grange which is a council areas, but a lot of houses are privately owned. The schools all have generally good reputations and good ofsted I have no experience of these schools just what I have seen when looking around and heard from other mums. This is a very gren leafy area close to town. We also have a great outdoor swimming pool closeby.

The other side of letchworth is also very nice but the housing stock is a bit newer. The lordship area is very nice with a great primary school. I would personally avoid the jackmans estate which is opposite the lordship estate. I don't know much about it but from I do know I'm not keen.

There are 2 state secondaries in letchworth. The high field school has a great reputation and fearnhill school is improving I think.

Letchworth is a lovely town if you have children. We have a lovely splash park and lots of great walks. Good links to London. The town has all you need but is quiet! Down the road nearby hitchin is a lovely market town.. But letchworth town is slowly getting better. We have a lovely Art Deco cinema and a new big prezzos has just opened opposite.

Lots of friendly toddler groups and music groups. I personally really like letchworth.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need to know anything else. Good luck!

Thank you so much for replying and all that information! Very kind of you. :)
It's so hard trying to get to grips with the area/s within Letchworth! lol
I've read elsewhere that there are two council type estates in Letchworth? One in the north side (The Grange?) and the other on the south side (Jackmans Estate)?
Please correct me if I'm wrong?

I'm glad you said what you did about the 'Jackmans Estate' as there was a property there that we were considering looking at (Jackmans Place), but now I know to avoid.

There were also 3 properties on that side, Parkfield, Townley & Jarden. Are they also a part of the 'Jackman Estate' as they are over that way, but I am unsure as to if they are a part of it?

We have also seen a couple of properties West of the Town Centre, Abbots Road and Hillbrow? Do you know anything about that side of Letchworth at all?

Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm just trying to get a feel for the area. lol

We are moving from North London, so anywhere we go has got to be considerably quieter than where we are now.

My daughter is nearly 6 and my son is nearly 3 and we need to do this move for them.
Where we are now is no place for them to grow up and have a great childhood.
I've personally been in this area for 31 years and have seen how it has and is deteriorating, it saddens me.
I just want the best for my children, even if it means moving 33.5 miles away. :)

Thank you again and I look forward to hearing back from you.
x

Yes the roads you mention sound like they are on the jackmans estate... Although jackmans place is seperate from the estate. If you come and look round you will see what I mean!

The west side of letchworth like abbots road is. Very mixed area. Some nice areas, some not so nice. It's best to come and have a look.. It's pretty obvious as you drive around where is nice and not so nice like any town really.

The grange estate is to the north of letchworth. I don't live there but I know lots of people who do. It is a an older council estate where the houses are very solidly built and most of it is fine. Again there are some 'rougher' parts but a lot of it is now privately owned. Two schools serve the grange estate. Northfields and stonehill. Both are ok from what I hear.

To the west side icknield infants serves a large catchment. From what I hear and my short visit it has improved massively over the past couple of years and recently had a good ofsted.

The school on the lordship estate is very well thought of as is hillshott infant school which is also over that side of town. They are both consistently good schools from what I have heard.

I think letchworth is a great place for children to grow up as you have the best of both worlds. Very open spaces.. A lovely greenway. Standalone farm. It also has a good station in the town with good links to London.

Hitchin is just down the road too which is a lovely little town. X

Hello, from the roads you mention I'm guessing you are looking at the cheaper end of the properties in Letchworth (though actually there's not much on the market at the moment so maybe that's why!).

If so, the options will likely be Grange area (though this is going up in price, a couple of the schools up there have been 'good' for a while), Jackmans (the school there is not so good I've heard and wouldn't recommend the area), a few bits around Hillbrow (though it is near the better secondary and outstanding catholic primary so prices depend on road/house), and on the west side - Abbots, Bursland, Eldefield, Mullway, Hall Mead etc, near Icknield infant school.

We live on the west side. The houses are not the most attractive but good value three-beds. My son will be going to Icknield which I was initially concerned about but they've just had a good Ofsted and I feel a lot more confident about it after going for another information evening.

We moved when I was pregnant with my son (from Hertford which was too expensive!) and I really like the area. There are fantastic parks, a good kids' farm, great indie cinema, the shops are slowly getting better. It is poor for pubs, and restaurant choice isn't great either (go to Hitchin/Baldock for more options!) but that wasn't a priority for us. There's a good community feel and there's loads of events on in the town centre, especially in the summer.

When it comes to moving up the property ladder there are loads of fantastic unique houses here to aspire to, and still cheaper than in any nearby towns :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply & my apologies in the length of time for my reply.
We have since found a lovely place in Royston. :)
