Possibly moving to Penryn/Falmouth and could really do with some advice on primary schools.

Hi ladies,
My husband has been offered a job in Penryn (and we are seriously considering it) but we currently live in Suffolk, so it's hard to just pop down and see the local area. He has been to Falmouth before and assures me that I'll love it, but my main concern is the local schools. My son is due to start in September and I have a daughter who will also need to attended in a few years. At the moment, we are going purely off the ofsted reports and it looks like Penryn and Mabe Primary may be the best? There is an outstanding primary in Falmouth, but also 2(?) not so good and so we are thinking it would be safer to live in Penryn or Mabe?

Any advice on these local schools would be really appreciated as I know you shouldn't always go off the ofsted report (and we are going to visit the schools at some point) but local mums always have a better idea of what's really going on.

Thanks for any help in advance,

Michelle x

Helloooooo! Yay you're in -- that is fantastic and sounds like its all gone relatively smoothly!

I've had some serious family stuff this summer so disappeared from here for a while - really pleased to pop back and find your good news!

It's gone a bit cold and wet but there are still some an places to find. Shall we have a meet up (with WineWineWine perhaps rather than a daytime BrewBrewBrew)? BadRoly are you up for it?Smile

Hello Ladies

I hope you don't mind me dropping in but we are due to move to Falmouth in January. My daughter has been accepted at King Charles, but I am a little concerned that the school is a little chaotic for her having come from a small village school where she is currently excelling. I wonder if anyone has any advice on the school as it is worrying me to the point of wondering whether we should pull out of our sale and purchase of our new house which is almost opp the school and was one of the key reasons for buying it.

Thanks Sue

Are you moving from far away?

BadRoly are you there? Iirc you have DCs at that school?

Tbh OP I think there are so many good reasons for children to go to their nearest school. And a carefully managed move can be really positive life experience for a child. No reason to think your DC will not do as well at the new school... Or even better?

What are you worried about with King Charles?

Ah bugger, just seen this so guessing I'm too late. Mine don't go to King Charles so I couldn't have helped anyway.

Hi! I'm hoping I can resurrect this thread as I've found it a useful read!
We are from Essex but have been living in Altarnun (on the edge of Bodmin moor between Launceston and Bodmin) for almost 4 years now and tbh we hate it. It's really isolated, there are no decent clubs for our children to join within a 45 minute radius and the rain, oh the rain 😭
We like Falmouth, but don't know the area overly well, and we're thinking that it would be a better fit for us as it's livelier, busier, more to do and hopefully more things for our children to do. Keen to hear your thoughts?

OP, how did you get on settling into Penryn? Are you still there?

@KirstyBakerCornwall

What do your children like doing? There's surf life saving (train in the pool in the winter/sea in the summer) but it's very well subscribed so you'll probably need to go on a waiting list depending on age of children/which club you go for. In Penryn there's Granite Planet for climbing and they do a kids club, there's Raze the Roof soft play and there's Penryn Gymnastics. There's after school learn to sail kids lessons at Mylor Sailing School (not during the winter), swimming lessons and also fun swim sessions at Ships & Castles, there's a martial arts group or two as well. If they like rock pooling then Castle Beach is particularly good although the rocks at either end of the other beaches are also good. There's swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing too. There's a pottery painting place (if it's still open) in the town and another at Cornwall Gold.

All of the above is on hold/being altered during the coronavirus though. p.s., it does rain in Falmouth too :)
