London vs Bristol: Why does the latter snub our Olympic Heroes?

MeetTheMedallists · 27/05/2014 23:01

Next month, Team GB athletes have put together a host of social and sporting events for people to share time with, try out sports and even compete alongside the Athletes.

Though at least half the price of London's equivalent activities, which have six weeks out from their activities already raised over £81,000 for numerous charities, the events in Bristol are struggling to raise money for the local charities.

We have approached over 350 Companies and Organisations.

Be interested in your views as why the Harbourside Games has failed to ignite the city?

Have a look at www.harboursidegames.com and see what we are trying to achieve.

Appreciate your feedback.

It could be that people in London feel more partionatly as the games were help there.to be honest I had not heard about it until I read this post.

No idea but I'm just outside of Bristol and also have never heard of it before

I'm a PE teacher in Bristol and had also not heard about it? Although to be fair it looks rather on the expensive side for children to participate in. Which would be my main criticism actually. The Olympics were supposed to bring about a lasting legacy and inspire athletes of the future - those who could afford to take part in these events will be well past their sell by date on that front. If I had the money I would have loved to have got involved in something like this, particularly the activities, rather than the ball. If you had also put sessions on for pupils, as a teacher I would have willingly organised for students to come along, as they are the ones we need to inspire...

I Live locally and not heard of it. Had a look at the website you posted to, seems to be aimed at corporates who want to spend 500+ on a days volleyball! a gala ball or pay £50 for 2 mins on a rowing machine (really??)

You are being very rude to say people in bristol don't support our Olympians. Many attended the Olympics, some were Olympic athletes, many were games makers. Lloyds who have their he in bristol were one of the main sponsors and some of their staff were seconded full time to work on the Olympics and were torch bearers etc.

People are not signing up to your event because it is poorly publicised, poorly designed ( see £50 for 2 mins rowing machine as example) and overpriced. I can't see this getting the thumbs up from many bristol corporates, it isn't inclusive enough and the Olympians are not big names. It looks like a money making venture with a charitable donation being made rather than fully for charity.

You have got a cheek coming on here slagging off local people just because your event is poor. Shame on you.

Just did search of local paper and there is no coverage of events so far. But surely ' harbourside games organisers claim bristol snubs Olympians' would be a great headline. Will email them this thread.

I'd never heard of this? Would suggest it wasn't advertised very well. Seems to be very corporate focused, but I doubt the (large) company I work for would be keen on this as a team builder - too competitive rather than a laugh and cooperative. And too expensive to be viable for the social fund to sub voluntary attendance. So I guess what I'm saying is who were your intended market?

Agree that I would expect a sports/Olympic themed thing like this to involve kids, generally I would expect such events to be more inclusive really. If this is just an opportunity for loaded businessmen to show off to each other how good they are at squash/volleyball/etc not surprised it's not as popular as London, coz bristol is full of nice down to earth people not rah-rah idiots :p
