Moving to Swaythling

Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone could help - we've just found out we will be moving to Burgess Road, Swaythling in the summer holidays so are now looking for school places. Does anyone have any thoughts on the 2 most local schools - Swaythling Primary and Bassett Green Primary? We have 3 children - 7yr old twin boys and a 4yr old girl. We know nothing about the area and have little time left for research so any advice very gratefully received! Once schools are sorted we look forward to learning more about living in a new place - excited!

Um. OK. Does it have to be Burgess Road, or can you be a bit further south and get into Highfield or Portswood schools?
Your secondary there will be Cantell.
Is this a job at the Uni - is it possible to live further afield along one of the Unilink bus routes?

Thanks for your reply - yes, we already know the address as the house is provided with my husband's job so there is no choice there....

okey dokey
TBH, get settled in and then look around.
Feel free to PM : I used to live in Glen Eyre Hall and have been in and around the Uni for the last 30 years

Bassett Green is really good now I believe, it had a complete overhaul after a bad OFSTED some years ago. Bitterne Park Primary is much better if you can get in, not too far to walk if you're at the bottom end of Burgess Rd.

I don't know anything about schools as I home educate our two youngest but I know that area well as we live just off Winchester Road. We love the library which is open every day except those starting with a 'T'; we love the food that can be bought along Burgess Road and we love the Common which is close by too.

St James Park which is not too far away has a great play area and Parklife cafe which sells kids hot chocolate with marshmallows and sprinkles for a super cheap price as well as great brownies, coffee and hot snacks.

Try Mansbridge School as you will be in the catchment area for that.
Cantell is a good secondary as is Bitterne Park.

Thanks for all the advice - will definitely check out the parks, common, library and hot chocolates! The boys have been offered a place at Swaythling Primary and our youngest at Bassett Green so we'll see how things pan out with waiting lists etc. Getting excited now - we move 10 weeks today!

Bassett Green is a much larger school than Swaythling, I would choose Swaythling out of the two but if you could get into Highfield or Portswood I would do that.

Thanks to everyone for their responses - we've been here 6 weeks now and are really liking it, even if we feel a bit overwhelmed at times with all the "newness" after a big move. Looking forward to getting back into school routine and meeting new people now :) All 3 children are going to Swaythling and the boys have started and seem to be loving it - the youngest is v keen to join them next week :) We've discovered St James park and love it and have walked to the Common and love the library too - wonderful staff and great activities over the summer. Thanks everyone
