Airplane noise

Looking out for some advice on the following all comments will be greatly appreciated.
We are looking to move into the Clapham area not sure yet where or into the Wimbledon area and so I wanted to ask of you how bad or not so bad is the disturbance of airplanes on your neighborhood?
The questions comes about as we travel extensively for work so the last thing we want is to be under an airplane path - is this avoidable in these areas or is this just a fact of life?

I don't find the noise very noticeable to be quite honest. Although we don't live in Wimbledon per se, there often enough to notice if the planes were particularly noisy.

You would get helicopters droning over Wimbledon Park area over Wimbledon Fortnight though....but that is only a fortnight's worth of noise on a yearly basis!

It depends where you're moving to, it can vary hugely. Most planes in the SW2-18 area are going to Heathrow so I'd recommend looking at this site:
www.heathrowairport.com/noise

The HAA can also send you hard copy maps showing flight paths. Look out for the areas on 'noise preferential routes', as these are used for take off and landing (so the planes will be at their lowest and loudest).

Personally I think the plane noise has worsened, with planes flying lower and late at night/early in the morning. it can also be bad at weekends/holiday peak times as planes are 'stacked up' waiting to land, so circling at a low altitude repeatedly.

Also the government is likely to approve Heathrow expansion next month which will double the numbner of night flights. The govt really hasn't shown much concern over the impact night flights have on people's lives. Interestingly a number of London councils (inc Wandsworth I think) took the govt to the Human Rights court a few years ago (and won) but the ruling was overruled on appeal.

Hello
Airplane noise is okay in Wimbledon. You do hear them at night time but only a few of them and it's not that loud. In Clapham you do hear them more as it can be quite noisy as some areas of Clapham are under the flight path.

I've lived in Wimbledon Village, house sat in South Wimbledon and now live in Clapham South. We found the flight path very noisy and annoying in both Wimbledon areas but it isn't a problem in Clapham. The planes do seem to start earlier now, but that could be because I have a three month old so am up more in the night!
