Canterbury High School?

We are considering moving from Bromley, Kent to Canterbury. I have twin boys currently in Year 3 and would like some advice on which area to head for to get the best primary and secondary school. They are not proving to be geniuses (yet!) and we haven't won the lottery (yet!) so I need advice on the non-selective schools. Canterbury High seems to be the best option and the linked primary school. Does anyone have children at this school and can you tell me what it's like? Thank you.

curlywurly2020 did you decide on Canterbury Primary School or find out anything about it? I am currently considering moving my children there but am finding it very difficult to find out anything about the school!

In general, in Canterbury (and its surrounding areas), the schools that people rate are Bridge, Blean, and Barham. Also rated are St Peters, and St Stephens. The three Bs are slightly outside of Canterbury (Blean being the closest), St Peters is right in the middle of Canterbury, St Stephens just slightly off.

Of that lot, St Stephens has the biggest intake - 3 form, and after KS1, they transfer to St Stephens Junior.

St Peters and Barham are the smallest, with 1 form entry.

Bridge, Blean are 2 form.

here's more info - scroll to the end. There's details about the furthest distance accepted for each school. www.kent.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/17925/Primary-admissions-booklet-Canterbury-and-Swale.pdf

Hi there.

Canterbury Primary has a fairly poor reputation among a lot of Canterburians as far as I can tell, basically it was the old Beauherne school which changed name - I imagine it has had some investment and input but tbh CHC is not a desirable school in itself, despite huge investment.

Saying that there aren't any desirable non selective schools in the area. Not IMHO in any case and I speak as a long term resident who grew up here, with a non selective-assessed child whom I'm currently homeschooling for want of a decent place to send him.

Primary schools are as previous poster described, the most contention is at Blean and St Peters for Canterbury residents.

People at the South end will often travel to Bridge rather than use the local school (Pilgrims Way).

St Thomas is also a good one if you're Catholic.

The primary school is doing really well and about to double in size with a new million pound refurb, it received a good from Ofsted recently. Canterbury high school received ofsted Outstanding in 2009 and is awaiting it's next full inspection I think. It has good facilities, and achieves about the same as other schools in Canterbury.

Hi,
We are also thinking of making the move to Kent and Canterbury is an option, we have two children at the mo in years 3 and 5. So am very interested in this thread. Am I right in thinking that Canterbury Primary is doubling in size? Would love to hear from anyone who's children go there.
Thanks

I think the old 'reputation' among parents is difficult to go by as it changes so quickly,... Canterbury Academy includes a Primary and a High school on one campus and both are popular, oversubscribed and have waiting lists. It is true the new building for the primary is coming along and plans are for it to be ready in September 2015. I have heard the admission number for the Primary will go up from currently being 30 to 60 (i.e. 2-form) but don't know if that means there will be extra classes for all years or not,..
