St Bartholemews Year 6 ?? - Need Advice Re: Pressurised SATs Teaching, before I Move DD from Anther School for this Reason ...

My DD is having a really hard time at her current school, due to putting it politely some very odd maths teaching methods by a new teacher in her current class, this has left DD stressed to hell, rapidly been put off a subject she has always loved & more than excelled in & having very worrying meltdowns, due to the sheer frustration & undermining attitude if this teacher. This along with other issues making me feel perhaps we need to just move her or take her out if school all together until high school as this is also affecting her physical & mental health badly.

We have an appointment with St Barts next week & on paper, it looks great, but on paper her current school looks good too & it has been up until now, but the year 6 pressure there is crazy, especially with Maths, as it stands now, perfectionist DD who would have sailed through a Maths SAT with a high grade, is feeling so stressed by it all & not getting the time allowances her health problems & her GP & OT dictate, leaving her further demoralised & feeling a failure before she even tries, looks set to panic so much she could well not achieve as well as she is capable of.

How bad is the year 6 SATs pressure in St. Barts ??

& anything else I should know

TIA

St Bart's is not pressured, and has a warm atmosphere. High turnover of children because it is inner city, so they are used to having new kids.

But all schools need good SATs scores because that is how they are judged. Do you think your DD is going to flunk her SATs? It's a bit tough on St B's if so - they have small classes usually so one child doing badly will affect their overall ratings, and they won't have the chance to help her before SATs start.

Thank you, that's all good to know :)

  • no, DD will very likely excell in her SATs, shes considered G&T pretty much across the board, though this teacher mentioned above likes to undermine the brighter DCs which is upsetting DD a lot as she is a perfectionist -

though I now realise that part of the problem with her old school is that it turns out they got a slap on their wrist in the last Ofsted for failing the more able kids at SATs level, so they are heaping the pressure on with a trowel & repeated testing, rather than teaching pretty much daily to put that right - but they've completely missed the point that the brighter DCs tend to be more highly strung perfectionists who feel the pressure more so :( & DD has health problems on top of that to deal with & not getting the allowances she needs for that etc

In the end it got so bad, that Ive had to bite the bullet & put her health first & I have now taken her out of school & waiting to hear if we got the St Barts place - fingers crossed

Just to update - a place was made for DD at another local school which has been brilliant for her & suits DDs needs far better - apparently there were similar issues with St.Barts year 6 as the school we took her out of, but not other years.
