Do you think the local zoo has misplaced a cat or 2?

Well it wasn't me that let them out!
There is a big cat near Thorney, thanks to bad management f the old zoo there and one in the Ramsey villages too.

A cheetah escaped from Hamerton a few years ago, but only made it as far as the next farm. It ate the tyres off a child's bike, but apparently it was tame because it'd been hand-reared. I still wouldn't want to try and scratch behind its ears!

I didn't know there used to be a zoo in Thorney, when did it close?

This only goes up to 2011 but has details of each sighting.

I always worry that mine are going to get mistaken for wildcats, they are massive. Fortunately they're too lazy to stray far from home.

Mogz · 03/01/2014 12:13

I think the Thorney zoo was decades ago, before my time anyways, I've only heard about it from locals.
Wonder how the Hamerton cheetah got out, the fences there are really high and there's an awful lot of gates. Lucky it was just one of the Han reared cheetahs and not Blizzard or Lady the tigers!

Becketts · 03/01/2014 13:53

Are you a Hamerton regular too? We really need to renew our season tickets. No idea how the cheetah got out. Blizzard is scary enough behind bars!

Mogz · 03/01/2014 15:43

When we lived in Sawtry we were there more often than not with various cameras and sketch books. We're a bit nuts about animals Smile. I did start to do some volunteer work there too but bad health forced me to stop. Hoping to go back this year once I've passed my driving test so I don't have to rely on DH to take me. Blizz is a scary beast, if you ever get the chance to do one of the up close encounters with the tigers then go for it, they're so much bigger up close!

Becketts · 03/01/2014 16:04

Ooh, I live in Sawtry! I wonder if we know each other. I did have a look at the cheetah experience thing but it was a bit pricey for me.

We were only there for 8 months unfortunately, then our landlady decided to sell up. We miss it, it's a nice village, just the right sort of size. I think we most miss being able to order take away though, no one delivers to us now, mind you that'll probably help the new year's diet plan!
Perhaps we should organise a meet up at the zoo once the nicer weather is here, I think there are a few people in the villages around pe28 that frequent MN.

Becketts · 03/01/2014 22:09

Sounds good! I know crocvillagemum and I've met a couple of others but I get confused between local names and MN names so I don't know who they are...

According to folklore, Black Shuck terrorised East Anglia in 16th century. He towered at seven feet tall, with flaming red eyes and shaggy black hair
