Advice on moving to either Southfields or Balham?

We're currently living in a flat in Clapham, between the Commons. My husband and I really enjoy all the amenities of the area and really love it here. With the arrival of our son, however, we are considering selling the flat and buying a house with a garden. Unfortunately, we're priced out of this part of Wandsworth (for the type of property we would like) but could probably afford a decent sized house in the Southfields Grid or Balham. Both areas seem to have advantages (such as good schools) but I was hoping for some "insider" perspectives on both areas.

The Southfields grid looks gorgeous and tree-lined and certainly has the look and feel we are after from a residential perspective. What puts me off (and perhaps these are all misconceptions) is that it appears a bit quiet. I couldn't see that many shops, coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance. We're also worried about having the District Line on Southfields as the main transport link into central London.

On the other hand Balham seems to have plenty of amenities but the streets overall seem less tidy and green. The area has so far failed to inspire me, but I think this is because it is really difficult to gain a real understanding of which corners of the area we should be focussing on to get everything we need.

I would be very grateful if anyone could share their experience of living in either area, particularly with young children.

I know absolutely nothing about Southfield's, but Balham has been brilliant with my first baby. I've just gone back to work but I had such a fantastic maternity leave, and that was due to all the great facilities in the area. There's exercise classes, music groups, swimming classes, baby massage, a choir, classical music recitals, play groups etc, and a short hop on the Northern line with the baby carrier and you also have baby cinema at Clapham Picture house (and I'm sure I've missed loads). I really enjoyed regular meet ups with my NCT group, particularly for walks on Wandsworth and Tooting commons, and unlike many NCT groups in London we all lived within about a mile of Balham, so meeting up was easy. I'm sure this was because there are so many people with babies in the area so the NCT groups can be quite local. Most cafes etc. are baby friendly, and restaurants are quiet during the day so they don't mind groups of mums spreading out. Southfield's maybe just as good, but Balham has been brilliant!
