LRI, Leic General or Walsgrave to give birth in?

What do you reckon - I can apparently choose any of these hospitals to give birth in. I don't know anything at all about them. Does anyone have any pointers to help me make up my mind? Ante-natal care, post-natal (I've heard it can be hard on the wards?), car-parking, ease of getting to the actual hospital?

I had my first at the LRI and they were lovely so I am booked in for my second pregnancy there.

All three are about the same distance from home but the things that helped make my mind up were:

  • I live in Leicestershire so as I'm under Leics midwives thought it would be more linked up with LRI or Leic Gen
  • I work 5 minutes from LRI so easy to get to scans and clinics
  • Parking not easy at LRI but longest husband ever queued for car park was 20 mins (only once) usually about 10 (altho straight in today) and there are other car parks in the vicinity and he just allowed extra time. There is also a drop off point outside maternity unit if running late or in labour (But if parking worries you, you may want to consider the General as there is parking on the road as well as the car parks but I don't have direct experience of parking there)

I hope this helps.

I had both dd's at Leicester General, would definitely recommend it. Lovely, friendly staff even when they were incredibly busy. Parking is much easier and cheaper than lri. Their pool room is good, though I only got to use it with dd1.

There's a housekeeping manager on the postnatal ward who comes round every day to check that everything is to your liking. I was stuck there for four days with dd2 and he brightened my day.

Food wasn't brilliant though when I was there a year ago, fruit and veg was scarce. It may have changed since then. However, the toast and coffee after dd2 was born was the best I've ever tasted!

I gave birth at the LRI, I couldn't fault it they were very good. I had a mobile epidural (was planning on the home from home suites they have their which were lovely) which meant I recovered quickly and could still feel the pressure to push. When I had ds the General didn't offer these but it may have changed. I had a MW with me in the room for 26 hours (due to mobile epi they have to stay with you)
Parking can be a pain but as dp came before visiting started it was ok for him, I also got admitted in the evening so the carpark was empty. I have moved since then and live nearer to the General but think I will still got LRI if I have another.

Hello everyone,

We're just going to move this to Leicestershire local talk at the request of the OP.

Ah, we're not because something has gone weird. Bear with us! Flowers

I'm giving birth in Walsgrave - well UHCW which is what I assumed you meant? This is because I'm under various specialists there for ongoing health problems so it just made sense.

I'm currently 25 weeks and have had absolutely fantastic care - my Obstetrician is brilliant, the facilities are modern, the midwives are all very nice and there is always advice at the end of the telephone.

Car Parking is a total ball- ache though Hmm

MsMowbray · 14/12/2013 17:49

Oh yes, Walsgrave changed its name, didn't it. My main concern really is the possibility of getting stuck in rush-hour traffic....and I'm a bit terrified of the roads into LRI. But there you go, it's got to be somewhere. Good to hear all the positive stories....

I live in Hinckley and the LRI is an absolute nightmare to get to!! The GEH is considered to be my 'local' but I would have been very worried about having the baby there! Grin

Thankfully, it only takes me 20 minutes to get to UHCW and is straight down the M69 so a very easy option in terms of accessibility.

jammiecat · 14/12/2013 23:34

Assuming you're in Melton (from your MN name) have you considered St. Mary's - www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/aboutus/departments-services/maternity/st-marys-birth-centre/about-us/

I've heard good things about it, but not an option for me unfortunately.

Hi all,

We're just letting you know that we've managed to move this to the local boards now.

LRI is indeed a bit of a nightmare to get to - but is very good for all kinds of specialist care. You might find you get shunted one way or the other for various reasons as time goes on.
