Local or Private Schools that provide support services.

Hi,
I am moving to Glasgow in April of next year from an International school in Asia. I have a child who just turned 9 who is mildly dyslexic and currently receives amazing support in reading, writing and speech in their current school. We are looking at both local and private schools, but our primary goal is to find a school with great support services that can help them move ahead. If you can offer any advice in this area, that would be really terrific. Thanks so much.

I think it really does depend on the local school and its ethos. The HMI reports will give you one perspective - but you really need to visit the schools to get a feel.

Ds' primary school seemed to be great at providing support - but I can only speak from my experience with him. He wasn't dyslexic but was a late developer vis-a-vis reading (only finally "got" it towards the end of P2 when he was 6 and a half) - this was despite getting 6 weeks 1:1 tuition at the beginning of P2 from the depute head before we jointly agreed that it was best for his confidence to move him down to the middle group (they split in to 3 groups for language time and number time).

He's now at secondary school and doing well - in the top (apparently very able) English set.

I've got no real experience of the private schools: I have a friend who has kids at Glasgow Academy and her dd (slightly younger than yours) I believe has some language/dsylexic issues and has been well supported. On the other hand, ds was "rejected" by Hutchesons Grammar School, age 4, I think becasue at the time he couldn't read and they woldn't have given him the support he got at his (excellent) state school Hmm

Hi prettybird,
Thanks for the reply. We are due for a visit on the first of the year, so I too have a feeling that I will have to get a feel of it through the visits. He was diagnosed at his current school, but do know, he probably would not have gotten in to the school pre -diagnosed. Which is so sad.

Glad to hear your son id doing great now. Yay!

Do you have any idea about where your are going to be staying in Glasgow? There are plenty of people on here who will give you a view as to the local primary schools.

Or are you wanting to try to use the school to educate (forgive the pun Wink) your choice as to where to locate?
