Moving to Worthing...

Gingerbreadlife2014 · 19/11/2013 19:59

Hi
I am planning to move to Worthing - from South London with my teenage daughter, to start afresh - and to set up our new home.
I have done a lot of research into the different areas, but wondered whether anyone could shed some light on what, if any difficulties ethnic minorities face in Worthing.
I've been looking for houses in areas like Tarring, Broadwater, Offington and some parts of Salvington - but should I avoid any areas?
I've visited Worthing four times over the last fortnight - and everyone I met seemed very friendly and I had no problems - but any insights be gratefully received.

I'm also looking at colleges for my daughter; she will be going into 6th form next year. I'm wondering whether Worthing College would suit - or whether she should go to one in Brighton (she isn't that keen on leaving London!).
Thanks!

Any thoughts anyone on what it is like in Worthing for ethnic minorities?
Hoping to hear some feedback...

Hi Gingerbread - I don't know Worthing that well myself but I've put a shout out on Twitter for you. You might also want to re-post on Mumsnet West Sussex. Hope that helps!

Hello Gingerbreadlife2014
I shared your post on Gransnet Worthing's Facebook page (I'm the local editor) and one person has replied so far:

"I would say that Broadwater is a good choice of area, as the teenager will have easy access to town and trains. College in Brighton may suit someone used to the London buzz. Ethnicity isn't too much of an issue now, Worthing is becoming more multicultural. Hope that helps"

I have lived in Brighton but have slowly moved my way along the coast and now live in sunny Worthing. It's lovely, a bit slow paced but you if you are comparing it to Brighton. On occasions you can pick up a vibe but you really wouldn't get that in Brighton. Hope that helps!
Let us know what you decide :)

We moved to Broadwater from Brighton, and we lived in London before that. It's great for kids; the schools are excellent and the sea and South Downs are close by. I'm BME and I have to say Worthing is not diverse but it is welcoming. The demographics are changing because of young families moving over from Brighton and Hove. Although this does not make it more ethnically diverse, it makes it easier to make friends with others who have also recently moved...

The areas you mentioned are all nice. Also, West Worthing south of the train tracks is lovely too.

Good luck with the house hunting.

Hi everyone
Thanks very much for your helpful replies. Really grateful for these!
I meant to check for replies sooner but have been juggling various things. I am now working near Worthing and staying in Worthing on weekdays (to try before I buy) - and returning to south London at the weekends. So far so good.
I am looking for a quieter pace of life sussex22 - and Worthing seems to offer just that - and everyone I`ve met - around, at the shops and the station etc seems very friendly.
My DD may not move with me after all - but at least all she would need is there if she changes her mind.
Thanks too for sharing from a BME perspective Lucy61 - useful to know. Would love to hear if you received any further replies via Gransnet MumAndNanna.
Thx

I have to say, Worthing has never struck me as the slightest bit multicultural in any way, shape or form.

I don't imagine racism would be a problem for your DD (it's not that far behind), but she may well be the token ethnic face.

I went to Worthing 6th Form myself (left in '99) and I had one Asian friend. I don't remember there being any black pupils whatsoever.

Gingerbreadlife2014 · 04/01/2014 23:57

Thanks Saucyjack - I have been in Worthing for a few weeks now and see what you mean.
I must say that my experience of the town so has been very positive - and I`m looking forward to finding a home and getting settled in.
Walked along the sea front and around the town centre this afternoon - and I love the fact that the pace of life is slower (no cut-throat London-style hustle and bustle).

Hi I too am looking to relocate to Worthing, I am black British, parents from the carribbean, my husband is British originally from Kidderminster, we want to move from East London, walthamstow and have chosen Worthing. Would love to communicate with anyone who has made the leap, or in the process. We are looking to move in the next few months. Our experience so far is that we have not had any problems. I personally would like to meet up with anyone with similar ethnicity for chats and sharing experience's.
Isobel
