St Ambrose Prep / Stella Maris School

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of either of the above schools? My youngest DS is 8 and in Yr 3 but has made very little progress with his reading and writing. He is dyslexic but otherwise bright. I'm thinking of sending him to a private school as the school he is at is clearly not for him. He is very far behind in literacy and would need additional support in this respect.

Comments would be appreciated.

Thanks x

HI Just saw your post, I don't know much about the Stella Maris school except that I live in Didsbury and I hear it is a good school, I believe it is quite a small school which is always a nice thing if your DS needs some extra support.
Ambrose Prep I have heard is going to turn into an academy next year which would if you were already in the school, suddenly be a great little school for free and of course you then have the added bonus of going into the high school. A friend of a friend just moved her 2 DS's there for this reason and they have settled in really well.

Thanks bananaboat.

St Ambrose Prep is now mostly full and there are entrance exams next Wednesday for the remaining places. I asked the Head if my son could have extra time in the entrance exam because his dyslexia assessment says he should get that but the Head said "no". (Would have to allow it in public exams under the Equalities Act - reasonable adjustments etc). I've therefore decided that it is not the right school for him even if he did manage to pass (which I'm sure he wouldn't given the scramble for places) .

The old head of St Ambrose would have taken him a couple of years ago but for several reasons I decided not to change his school at that time.

I asked St Ambrose if they would automatically get into the college from the prep and I got the impression that nothing had been decided about that yet.

Hi all,

Anyone currently have kids at St Ambrose prep who could she'd some light on the status quo? I hear bits here and there but as far as I know, they are still in the consultation period until Jan 2014. My oldest Son is due to start at the grammar school next year, and I'd be interested to know, what would be the likelihood of my four year old Son gaining a place at the prep or are all places sewn up?

My eldest is at st Ambrose college, the prep is very full and going there doesn't mean you will get entry to the college without passing the entrance exam. A pass is needed, and boys from the prep that pass will get a place.
