Do kids go out trick or treating in Glasgow?

Hi,
Visiting parents in South side for half term and my little ones want to go out for Halloween. We usually go round the local streets where we live in London. My parents say children do not do it here? Advice please!

Kids in Scotland have been doing it for many, many years - in fact it pre-dates "trick or treating" American style. I did it when I was wee (and I am 53 now Blush)

Up here it is called "guising" (as in " dis -guising" )- although the American term has crept in. However, the original meaning of "treat or treat" has remained. We used to have to do a "trick or a treat" in return for some reward (sweets, fruit, nuts, occasionally money) and kids nowadays are still expected to do a "turn" - a song, tell a joke or do a wee trick.

My SIL lives in Mosspoark and there are loads of kids who go trick or treating around there. I live in Pollokshields and with the lower housing density, there are not so many. I would go out with ds and tended to only go to houses where we knew the people or they had Halloween decorations visible. I'll be putting a carved pumpkin with a tea light outside and will maybe get 5 groups of kids around, if that.

Don't think ds will be going out himself this year - far too embarassing for a 13 year old! Grin

I live in Crookston and gave out 50 bags last year! When I lived in East Kilbride (Calderwood) I gave out loads too, I absolutely love it :)

How did you get on this year? I didn't have very many at all, then around 8.30pm I had about 10 chancing teenagers with no costumes on so I gave them "toffee apples" which were actually toffee onions.

Didn't have any Sad - despite putting out lit pumpkins Sad

Did mean that dh and da were happy bunnies though - all those treated sized sweets left over for them Grin

That's so bizarre - the reason I asked is because I had about 8 kids round, and most of our neighbours were avoiding answering the door. Poor show :(

No, they go guising like everyone else in Scotland!
