Moving to York... Haxby?

We are moving to Yorkshire but we have no connections there - no friends or family. Therefore, we would like some help!!! Anyone has any information about Haxby? We are thinking of moving to Haxby. We have a 4 year old, who might be going to St Peters (Clifton). I would really appreciate any help in relation to the area (Haxby) or any other area. Is this a safe area? Is it good? What about the school, any feedback on St Peter's school? Thank you.

I don't live in Haxby but my gran used to live in Wigginton, the village next door. My impression was that it's respectable and dull! Though quite nice for families with young children, I should think. There's a good range of shops and services locally as well.
There isn't anywhere in York that I would consider unsafe, except Micklegate (binge drinker's paradise) on a Friday or Saturday night. A lot of Acomb, some parts of Clifton (though not all - there are some lovely houses there) and Tang Hall are generally considered the less salubrious parts of York.
I have friends who had children at St Peter's and I don't recall them having any problems, although in general the traffic around Rawcliffe, Clifton and Bootham is appallingly congested.
Heslington, where I live, is lovely, although completely dominated by the University. Huntington has its fans, Strensall seems to me to be too far out with few local services. Fulford's good too, but a bit too near the river for my liking! There, now I've offended most people in York...

hi

My child goes to Clifton, the older one at St Olaves. Clifton is fab - a really lovely school with a great approach to learning. I don't know much about Haxby but it is pretty close to the centre of town and the school. There are quite a few families who go to the school who live there. If possible try to get somewhere walking distance to the school as traffic is a nightmare.

Good luck!

I wouldn't fancy a daily commute from Haxby to Clifton myself, but it is perfectly doable. Will you be working in the city centre? If so, again, I think a 30+ minute drive every morning would not be my cup of tea, which is what friends in Haxby do face.

If city centre living isn't what you're after there are some lovely, more 'suburban' areas of the town centre. I live in Heworth which I personally love, however it is a bit of a nightmare for schools. Bishopthorpe Road area is also lovely, however a bit more pricey.

Schools wise, Clifton seems lovely. If you're not within walking distance I personally wouldn't be brave enough to face the Minster School at pick up time! There is also BJS and Tregelles which are both quaker schools so very different from Clifton and Minster.

heworthmum, why is Heworthmum a nightmare for schools? I'm intrigued because it's one of the areas on our list if we move to York. We had been looking at hemplands primary and I thought we'd be in the catchment for Archbishops for secondary.

Oops... obviously I meant why is Heworth a nightmare for schools
