Any tips for where to live close to good schools? Need primary and high schools and somewhere close to train line for commuting!

I'm assuming you're commuting to London; Peterborough, Huntingdon, and St Neots are all on the East coast mainline. What's your budget and what sort of thing are you looking for? Do you want to live in a village or town?

Hi, hope it's ok to dive into this thread... saves creating a new one ;)

We are seriously considering St Neot's as our town to relocate to from sunny (pahahaha) Scotland.

I work in London (Kings X good for work) and wife and 2 kids (daughter 5, son 3) will be spending majority of time in/around town. We could do with a little help from other parents out there to help streamline my mashed brain!

We are looking (surprise surprise) at the Loves Farm development which is obviously going to be seriously close to train station for me and Round House Community School for wife and kids along with having the Tesco on site.

My questions are based around the town really:

  • what is St Neots like as a family town? Community, safety etc etc, the usual kind of local issues?
  • For those that live in St Neots, do you recommend the town / area at all... what do you see as the good, the bad and the ugly?
  • Shopping, meet-ups, events etc etc?

On paper, it seems the town has plenty going for it and having been there a couple of times now, must say it seems pretty decent but we are only scratching the surface and hope that locals would share their views with us.
Also: has anyone who lives on the Miller Homes site experienced any issues with their home (long shot that someone here has a miller home but you never know)?

The biggest question is regarding Round House School. I note from Ofsted inspection that the primary school, before becoming a sponsored academy, requires improvement... although it seemed to be making progress - does anyone with kids at the school have any views on the positives / negatives etc or any info they could share?

Think that's about all for now... sure there are a load of other questions needing to be asked though haha

Thanks in advance for any help as it will ease the pain my wee brain is going through just now!

also, we are totally open to any guidance of other potential towns that would suit /emo/te/1.gif

Thanks again

sorry, don't know what that link on previous post is about

I don't know about schools in St Neots but I go there quite a bit and it seems OK- there are not so nice bits but it's no worse than any other town of a similar size. It does feature more in the local paper for crime than some other towns but then the crime rate around this part of Cambs is pretty low and it's all fairly minor stuff.

There's a really nice park by the river and a leisure centre/swimming pool/gym with loads of stuff on for adults and children. There's also a big country park with a good visitors centre with children's activities.

Shopping is OK, you can always go into Cambridge or Bedford if you can't find what you want in St Neots. There's a Waitrose with parking in the town centre.

My DCs are 5 and 2 and there's lots for them to do in St Neots.

If you're looking at other towns too then you might want to look at Brampton, Godmanchester and Huntingdon. Brampton is really close to Huntingdon train station (east coast mainline) and has schools with good reputations. Huntingdon is smaller than St Neots and doesn't have as many shops but it's still close enough to Cambridge and also to Peterborough where there's a big shopping centre.

Thanks Becketts, that all sounds positive for sure - your time to respond is appreciated.

If any St Neot(ers?) have any experience of the school or the development at Loves Farm, help would be appreciated?

Thanks again for taking the time to respond Becketts :)
